GridPoint announced a partnership with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), an electric service provider based in Sacramento, CA, to deliver a new Energy Management Solutions (EMS) program to small and medium-sized commercial utility customers. SMUD customers that implement the program will gain automated management of their energy consumption through on-site hardware, cloud-based tools and analytics. The EMS technology provides critical insights into equipment health and performance so that customers can better control HVAC and lighting schedules, and troubleshoot equipment issues remotely. Supplementary, the solution collects and displays data in real-time enabling utility customers to learn more about their energy patterns and adapt operations to maximize savings.

With nearly 1.4 million customers in Sacramento, SMUD promises to provide reliable electricity at affordable rates. Small and medium-sized businesses are faced with numerous choices for energy efficiency projects, and are increasingly seeking guidance from their utility regarding the best options. SMUD, and other electric utilities, serve as trusted advisors and assist in identifying and delivering innovative technologies to best fit customers' needs. Doing so creates a true "win-win" with customers reducing energy spend while the utility partner reduces demand on the grid.

GridPoint, a smart buildings technology leader, provides visibility into facility operations in order to automate and control sites, lower energy spend and proactively manage day-to-day operations. The technology accommodates a majority of commercial buildings, requires no capital outlay from the customer, and will be managed and serviced by GridPoint. Energy savings typically exceed the monthly program fee so customers are cash-flow positive from day one.

"We want to help our small and mid-sized commercial customers take control of their energy use," said SMUD Chief Customer Officer Nicole Howard. "By working with GridPoint on this customized energy management solution, we'll be able to provide an affordable, effective set of tools to small and medium-sized businesses that can deliver the savings large commercial and industrial users have realized for years."

"With the energy landscape rapidly evolving, utilities are looking for ways to improve customer care, drive energy efficiency, and bring technology to the edge of the grid," said GridPoint's Vice President of Channel Sales, Jason Narod. "SMUD is an innovative leader and we are excited to partner with them and deliver value to commercial users."
