Role of STEAMDOSS v1.0 from Anasol Consulting in Steam System Optimization

Conventionally, in the energy auditing process, energy engineer uses spread sheet solutions to evaluate the savings. About STEAMDOSS v1.0

STEAMDOSS V1.0 is an energy engineering application software focused on the need of users in steam generation and steam user facilities. It is a tool to design, model and analyze these systems .It is designed on a system concept rather than individual components and aimed at providing one stop shop steam software solution for all steam and boiler plant applications.

The software can model and perform calculations commonly used in steam plant applications and can be used to model the generation plants and user facility system. The generation plants that can be modeled are boiler systems, feed water systems, heat recovery, and blow down systems. User facility systems include cooling tower, steam turbine and heat exchangers and associated components.

The software is designed with flexibility and ease of use in mind. It is designed based on object oriented design and modular concepts. Graphic User interface is provided in user input as well as in results for ease of use .User can drag and drop the shapes and build a system and perform the calculations .User can also track the results for each node or component wise. Facilities are also provided to print reports and diagrams and export them. The system can be run on US units or user selected SI or Metric Units or combination of them

Common optimization techniques in steam systems

The common techniques to evaluate the energy savings in steam systems are

1) Installation of an economizer or airpreheater
2) Change of fuels to evaluate the savings
3) Recover the blow down heat
4) Increase condensate recovery
5) Staging of Boiler operations

STEAMDOSS v1.0 and optimization

It is often necessary to identify the potential saving opportunities using any of the above optimization techniques and evaluate the best option to save energy in boiler and steam systems. It is also necessary to evaluate one or more combinations of the saving opportunities.

The common spread sheet solutions present calculations for a single option for a particular problem and often are complex and time consuming. However some times user also needs to model a total system and analyze the various savings opportunities in a particular site.In these cases, it is convenient to model a single actual model and analyze the scenarios related to the opportunity identified. User can change a single parameter and view the effect of the change on the overall system. User can ideally model an existing system and then improvise them with proposed changes. It is also possible to model a partial system for a particular scenario and evaluate the savings for that option on the same screen.

A partial system modeling is given as example in screen shot 1. In this example, user can model a simple boiler modeling the inputs such as steam conditions and system inputs in Boiler component. User then can model separately fuel, air and feed water as connecting sources to the boiler component. An alternate scenario can then be modeled using same design with economizer included and performing the calculations to evaluate the efficiency improvement for the particular conditions of air, fuel or feed water. A sensitivity analysis can then be carried out for changing fuels scenarios, or air temp or feed water temperature or pressure. Once these are carried out a feed water system can be modeled and added.

Finally user can calculate the payback utilizing the design utilities module.

Similarly, as another example, blow down recovery system can be modeled to calculate the energy savings. Please see screen shot 2.
