Siemens is on the
search for America’s smartest building! To track it down, Siemens has created
the Smartest Building in America Challenge, and is offering up a total of
$80,000 in prizes and charitable donations for the challenge winners. The
challenge is open to facility managers using Siemens APOGEE or TALON building
automation systems. Head over to the challenge website to get the
details on how to enter your building for a chance to be named the Smartest
Building in America. Source: Company When it comes to determining
actual building performance, it all comes down to data. Data takes the
guesswork out of energy management, and drives decisions as to what energy
conservation measures need to be taken in a facility. Portable data loggers are ideal
tools for collecting building performance data. These affordable, compact
devices can help establish energy performance baselines, and reveal a
buildings performance under real-world, rather than modeled, circumstances.
They offer fine-tuned visual performance feedback, measuring changes in
temperature and energy use when people enter and exit a building, turn on and
off lights, A new 30-page guide from Onset
details how portable data loggers can be applied in a number of building
monitoring applications, such as HVAC systems monitoring, commissioning,
Measurement & Verification, and load profiling. The guide offers
practical tips and techniques on a range of topics, including data logger
installation, monitoring plan development, safety, and data
interpretation. Source:Company WattStopper has
developed PlugCalc as a key component in its Energy Calculator Tool Kit. The
tool is available online at http://www.wattstopper.com/calculators
or as a free downloadable iPad app. PlugCalc enables users to calculate
energy savings opportunities as well as Return on Investment (ROI) by
automatically controlling plugged in office equipment and other plug loads.
These loads represent a growing source of electrical consumption in
commercial applications, accounting for as much as 20% of total energy use in
office buildings (data from the Department of Energy, Energy Information
Administration, Building End-Use Consumption Survey). Source: EPA THE SMART GRID:
Enabling Energy Efficiency and Demand Response Energy Management Handbook, 7th
edition
Newly revised and edited, this seventh edition includes
extensive revisions to seven of its twenty-eight chapters, including those
covering waste heat recovery, HVAC systems, energy management and control
systems, energy systems maintenance, alternative energy, indoor air quality,
and codes, standards and legislation. This comprehensive handbook has become
recognized as the definitive stand-alone energy manager's desk reference,
used by thousands of energy management professionals throughout the industry.
You'll find coverage of every component of effective energy management,
including energy auditing, economic analysis, boilers, steam systems,
cogeneration, waste heat recovery, building envelope, HVAC systems, motors
and drives / electric energy management, energy management control systems,
lighting, energy systems maintenance, insulation systems, alternative energy,
sustainability and high performance green buildings.
Source: DOE DOE announced awards totaling more
than $76 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to
support advanced energy-efficient building technology projects. The research
is designed to help make buildings more energy efficient and cost-effective.
The Recovery Act funds will also be used to develop training programs for
commercial building equipment technicians, building operators, and energy
auditors. Those initiatives will prepare workers to service and operate new
and existing buildings, to develop and deploy best practices resulting in
fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and to establish a green workforce with
technical expertise to reduce energy costs for consumers. The 58 selected
projects are in 24 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
Buildings account for about 40% of the energy used in the United States, as
well as 39% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions. Source: Company Source: AEE AEE Market Research has recently launched a series of market research reports
supporting market development and strategic planning for those engaged in the
energy business. With comprehensive analyses, these reports provide market
assessments and forecasts, identification of market opportunities,
discussions of trends, profiles of key players, and the most current market
data available. Plan to participate in
the upcoming AEE 2010 events!
