  • Case Study: World's Greenest Data Center

Source: Company
Escalating demand for greater computing capabilities and data storage meant Syracuse University needed to replace its outdated data center, which had been housed in an old brick building for decades. The university – regularly ranked among the Top 100 in the United States – responded with the opening of the Green Data Center, one of the world’s most energy efficient and green data centers. The 12,000- square-foot facility, which opened December 2009, is designed to use 50 percent less energy and produce fewer greenhouse gasses than traditional data centers.

  • NEW White Paper Provides Valuable Tips on Using Data Loggers to Analyze Building Performance

https://app.icontact.com/icp/loadimage.php/mogile/175206/011e6a791bfde8864bcf2eec5878ad4a/image/jpegSource: Onset

When it comes to determining actual building performance, it all comes down to data. Data takes the guesswork out of energy management, and drives decisions as to what energy conservation measures need to be taken in a facility.

Portable data loggers are ideal tools for collecting building performance data. These affordable, compact devices can help establish energy performance baselines, and reveal a buildings performance under real-world, rather than modeled, circumstances. They offer fine-tuned visual performance feedback, measuring changes in temperature and energy use when people enter and exit a building, turn on and off lights,
or run heating and cooling systems. They can also be used to help ensure that indoor air quality and comfort are maintained in a building.

A new 30-page guide from Onset details how portable data loggers can be applied in a number of building monitoring applications, such as HVAC systems monitoring, commissioning, Measurement & Verification, and load profiling. The guide offers practical tips and techniques on a range of topics, including data logger installation, monitoring plan development, safety, and data interpretation.

  •  Energy Efficiency Improvements Help Reduce Energy Costs for Winona County

Source: Company

Energy efficiency improvements helped reduce the city of Winona's energy costs by more than $120,000 in 2009, while similar upgrades saved Winona County more than $27,000 last year. The savings came from small changes such as retrofitting city traffic signals with LED lighting and changing light fixtures in county buildings to use lower-wattage bulbs, according to data presented this month by the city and county. But the small changes were part of a big investment, as the city and county spent more than $2 million to implement the upgrades as part of contracts with McKinstry, a company that helps businesses improve energy efficiency.

  • Green without Compromise, with the Industry’s Most Efficient UPS

Source: Company
Imagine your data center is not only the support engine for the business, but it is the business. That’s the scenario for NetRiver, the leading provider of collocation and interconnect services in Washington state. The company’s primary data facility in Lynnwood, Wash., provides a resilient platform for carriers, Internet content companies, hosting firms and enterprises to outsource their data center and network operations. The Lynnwood facility is not NetRiver’s only data center, but it is their newest, delivering 250-500 watts per square foot—or 5,000-10,000 watts per enclosure. Yet by 2008, NetRiver was facing a major expansion and needed another 1.5 megawatts of clean, computer-grade power to match its growth.

  • More Powerful Hydro Turbine Heads for Washington State

Source: Company
A major new, 45-ton piece of a hydroelectric turbine began a 2,720-mile journey to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Chief Joseph Dam in eastern Washington, where it will boost the renewable power generated by the Columbia River. The turbine runner manufactured by Alstom Hydro under contract with the Corps requires a police escort in some areas, since it measures more than eight feet high and 16 feet in diameter. Its route from Alstom’s manufacturing facility in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, Canada, was determined in part by weight limitations of roads and highways.
