30-Jul-10 I am building a new home, 5791 sq ft total, broken out as follows: main floor 2116 sq ft; daylight basement 2116 sq ft; upper bonus room 816 sq ft; garage 743 sq ft in Eglon, WA. I believe I'd like to heat/cool with a heat pump. What size unit will I require to adequately handle this project? Puget Power is telling me they need to know the LRA rating of the unit I'll be installing before they will give me electrical hookup. They have provided a number of 65 as being safe, but I have a feeling that is a low ball number. Can you please advise me as to what I need.

Thanks,

dave johanson

25-Jul-10 I have a old lennox ground condenser on a double wide trailer the numbers are all gone on the ID plate,In the inside wiring diagram to the best of my ability has a HS9-461 series wiring diagram, last winter I bought the house and the compressor went out I need to find out the size of the unit and if a carrier unit I had on another rental will interchange, that unit ID plate is model 38ycc036300 ser# 2897e21051.. If you can help me out that would be great thank you g kirkpatrick....
21-Jul-10 We purchased a 3200 square foot home (two story and basement)which was built in 1995 and has one unit for a/c and heat. We will eventually add another unit for the upstairs. My question is for now, how do we get the upstairs to cool in this 90+ degree heat we are having? The first level seems to cool well, it is just the upstairs that is warm.
19-Jul-10 Is there a device you can install on your furnace that will convert a two ton a/c unit setup over to a four ton unit without replacing the furnace?
10-Jul-10 how much freon does a 5 ton ac unit use with 20 ft of freon lines?
14-May-10 What is the amperage for a 4 ton 14 seer HVAC unit.
11-May-10 I have an Intertherm AS series power miser self contained air conditioning unit. The unit will come on and cool and the condensor fan will run. It seems when the unit gets hot and the condensor fan needs to kick back on it won't. I had an ac repairman out to look at the unit but it was rianing and he said he couldn't open the unit in the rain. He said it was probably the capacitor and would come back later in the week when it wasn't raining to replace it. He never came back so I replaced it. The unit started fine and was cooling with the condensor fan running and once it got hot and needed to kick on again same problem. Condensor fan motor spins freely when the unit is off. Any suggestions?
07-May-10 How do you determine what size capacitor to use on any given condenser

20-Mar-10 Are Carrier, Bryant and Payne the same?

This is quite important as a cancer pqatient will be coming to our home in three weeks so we need to make a decision and get it installed asap.

Zoning a new 1.5 ton heat pump from basement to 2nd floor of home. Basement has 880 sq ft and upstairs has open bedroom with frog with door which is closed the majority of the time Heat pump has died upstairs and we thought since need to replace that we would have it zoned to basement area as well. Heat pump is located beside the finished part of the basement in an unfinished area so all ductwork is already going upstairs and has cooled and heated quite well.
13-Mar-10 i need to change the heating system in my home.i want to use baseboard radiators so my question is,can i use a normal electric hot water heater to supply the heaters?my house is 900 sq feet and it is located in the province of newfoundland,ca. thanks

02-Feb-10 My sister has an older house and desperately needs a new evap cooler. The house is about 1800 sq ft. What size cooler will work best?
19-Jan-10 We have a new class 1000 clean room to install and i am trying to calculate the costs associated. The room size is 200 square feet. We would like to keep the temp witin 5 deg. f What size (ton) hvac would be appropriate?
19-Jan-10 Can a fireplace insert be installed instead of building a regular fireplace?
07-Jan-10 I own a cape code house where the basement contains a furnace that provides steam to radiators on my first level. Two years ago, I finished off the attic area to make a bedroom and a local plumber ran a loop off the furnace that connects to a section of baseboard to be heated by hot water. Ever since this has been assembled, the baseboard section bangs like crazy when the upstairs is pulling the water through it. My question is, is this an acceptable design or is the design incorrectly setup as it should not use baseboard hotwater units to heat it? Also, what is the best and most economical method to heat the new room: steam radiators, electric radiators... etc?

Thanks,
David

11-Dec-09 I would like to propose a system of components which will capture solar heat during the day, deliver the heat to a radiator for immediate heating needs, and store the surplus heat in an 250 gallon insulated tank (r-30)for night-time use.

1. Use a mixture of water and antifreeze as the heat transfer medium.
2. Use a solar collector to absorb heat from the sun.
3. Use a circulating pump to move heat to the storage tank, and a second pump to move heat to the radiator.
4. I would like to get the water mixture as hot as possible to have heat throughout the night.
5. I need make an informed estimate on the size of the collector, and the size of the pumps.

Given the fact that I live in Lufkin Texas and would like to the to provide enough heat to keep a small 1000 sq foot home insulated to r-30 specs at 72 F when the temprature outside is 32 F.

28-May-09 I bought a house in September in Dallas. It had a new compressor that is 3-ton generic. It looks like the coils are 4ton sized. I found out that the owner did this to get by. The house is 1875 sq ft. I have asked several HVAC contractors with a vested interest in selling me somthing and I get these four options.
One, wait till Summer and see if it keeps up with the heat.
Two, replace the compressor with a 4 ton R22 unit for about 3500.
Three, replace the entire system with the new system at 13 SEER. cost about 7500-8000.
Four, replace the entire system with the new system at 21 SEER. Cost about 10000 with a 1000 rebate and a 1500 tax credit possible.

What would you do? How cheap should a be able to get a R22 4 ton compressor? There has to be deals if this type of compressor is going away this year. No one quotes prices over the phone. They want to sell you a system. Do I need anything right now?
Thanks, TNT

04-Dec-08 i am in the process of replacing a 20 year old straight AC and heat system...compressor outdoors with evaporator coil and gas furnace underneath the house in crawl space. The system must heat and cool 1850 sq ft in Athens, GA. I am considering two possible systems...straight heat pump or heat pump supplemented by gas furnace. Will the electric supplement provided by the straight heat pump system be adequate for this climate without excessive cost? or...would you recommend use of hybrid system, heat pump supplemented by gas furnace?

In other words, will the cost of running supplemental heat with electricity exceed cost of running supplemental heat with gas? And will the heat provided by the electrical supplemental heat do a good enough job of heating the space? I have always had gas furnace heat but would like to move to the most energy efficient system possible without sacrificing quality of the heat and air provided.

I also have never had a heat pump. Are they reliable? dependable? really capable of the energy savings people are leading me to believe?

Any advise will be appreciated.
02-Dec-08 On a carrier rtu with gas heat I get the code for ignition lock out failure how do I fix that problem?
01-Dec-08 Our office space is a completely brand new build out of approx. 900 sq ft and a new 5 ton HVAC unit was installed. We have too much velocity and it is freezing cold air coming out when it runs on a short cycle of 15 minutes on/off (when on it runs approximately 15 minutes and is way too cold). We have four rooms with two supply and one return in each of our counseling offices (with doors closed 99% of the time in meetings). One kitchen area with one supply/return (and a closed door 100% of the time), and a small waiting room with one supply/return. Our landlord added one supply to one of the counseling offices that originally had one one due to initial complaints but wouldn't do anything else.
We hired an outside HVAC installer for an opinion and he says 5 tons is in excess and too much for this space with virtually minimal to none equipment giving off heat or anything. It is suggested to add another supply to even out the flow a bit but the concern is it will add more very cold air. Even if we add a zone system it seems it would potentialy freeze up the unit.
Do you see any options here?
01-Dec-08 I need to know what the range the industry charges to replace a compressor on a 5 ton 12 seer comfortmaker gas package unit first purchased and installed September 2002. Compressor is still under warranty.

Thank you in advance!
26-Nov-08 Around 1985, I attended an refer. class in which we had a working modle of a tube lite buld which would heat or cool. what was it and is it acailble?
  23-Nov-08 Hello,
I have 2 Carrier Infinity 21 central a/c units with 96.6% afue 58MVB040-14 40k btu gas furnaces and CNPVP3621 evaporator coils. Both units have roof top condensers. One condenser is about 10' directly above the evaporator and the other is about 30' above the second evaporator. My previous air conditioning had a 3/8" liquid - 3/4" suction lineset. Carrier specifies 7/8" suction lines with an upsize for the unit where the condenser is more than 20' above the evaporator. My contractor (a Carrier Presidential Award winner) says the current lineset is adequate. My concern is that a 3/4" line only carries 74% of the amount of refrigerant gas that the 7/8" line carries when the gas is at the same temperature and pressure and only 56% of of the amout of refrigerant as a 1" line carries when the refrigerant is at the same temperature and pressure. Since these units are rated at 19 SEER when installed per manufacturer specification I am afraid that a) I will take a hit on efficiency and the units will cost more to operate because they will deliver less BTU's per watt, b) in the event of premature condenser or TXV failure Carrier will not honor the warranty because the units were not installed in accordance with their specifications and c) the units will wear out faster because of increased pressure differential between the liquid and suction sides due to undersizing of the suction lines since these units are rated with the line sizes stipulated by Carrier. In addition, Carrier states that the filter drier is to be installed INSIDE just upstream of the TXV and the contractor has already installed the filter driers OUTSIDE at the condensers. My concern is that the TXV will be more subject to clog due to copper oxide sloughing since there is a lot of liquid line between the drier and the valve. I have requested that the contractor replace the suction lines and move the filter driers which I can't imagine them not doing because the contract states equipment will be installed per manufacturer specification. They are good guys with a great reputation but it is the same case as I have observed with a lot of technical workers. They do NOT read or follow instructions and specifications and do things the same way they have always done them. My question is this - is it overkill to install suction lines this size on these 2 ton units (recall they are rated at 19 SEER) and if you were me would you insist that they be installed and the filter driers be moved per manufacturer installation specifications? Thank you!

Ed Scherer
14-Nov-08 I have a raised ranch. The upper level is 1500 sft. Open floor plan except bath and 2 bedrooms. I am looking at a Rinnai 1004FA 10,000

14-Nov-08 I have a Fedders 2 stage high efficiency gas furnace that is about 6 years old. I need to extend the exhaust PVC pipe on the outside up about 4 feet. The pipe now is about 1.5 feet from were it comes out now. I live in eastern PA and did know if there would be a condensation problem or the length would not be allowed because of the furnace. Does anyone know if this is possible to extend?

31-Oct-08 How do I calculate BTU's needed to heat a house
30-Oct-08 I am negotiating a lease for my business. It is nearly 6,000 square feet. The landlord says the central a/c/heat is switched off at 6pm every night and altogether on weekends. My business is open 6pm-11pm and Sat/Sun all day. What are my options.

26-Oct-08 My Carrier Furnace is leaking water from the area under the blower. We have checked all the hoses to make sure they are clear. Took off a little black canister on the front where two short hoses go into and the main drain that goes under the house - all are clear. This includes the line under the house. We still can not find out where the water is coming from. Any help or is it time to call a professional?

25-Oct-08 I recently (July, 2008) had installed my first HVAC system. It was a 3 1/2 ton Carrier Infinity unit. My house is one story, measures 27' x 52', has newly installed energy efficient windows and doors. Now that I'm using heat, my two bedrooms on the end of my house (northside) are cooler than the rest of the house. They each have one heating vent in them. One room measures 13' x 14' and the other is 13' x 16'. Should another vent be placed in each room? There are two windows per room also. The vent is under only one in each room. The two windows without a vent under them stay very condensed. How do you figure the calculation per room to know how many vents are needed? Is there something that is used to measure the flow from each vent in the home to ensure consistency? If so, that was never done. Your help is greatly appreciated!!!
09-Oct-08 Trying to evaluate heating requirements for 36'x 48'x 24'h open space; 100kBTU oil furnace kaput;Rinnai space units have been suggested; at 10k BTU's how many required? There are ceiling fans in the sanctuary.Space is used max of 6 hrs. p/wk.

I plan on putting new double panel windows in this fall. The BTU input for this furnace is 95 BTH/HR.

Is this large enough because the physical size of the unit is smaller than the old one
?

11-Sep-08 hi, My name is Ron Bollinger. I'm a maint.tech at MWV (meadwestvaco)located in south centeral pa. We have 2(200) ,1 (250), & 1 (300) hp screw air compressers with large built air to air exchangers to cool the compressed air.The blowers are 48" in dia. turning at 875 rpm. with 9 blades per fan. I took temp. readings at the output of the exchangers & they are 190,190,170,&168 degrees fairenhit. Now thats a lot of hot air ! we are currently venting this to out side. Any way I need a BTU value.I'd be very thankfull for any help in this area. Thanks for your time Ron

18-Aug-08 How do I determine the AC requirements for a house of 1574 sq. ft.
Thank you!
16-Aug-08 We have a duel fuel furnace, it has been changed 2 different times in 6 years, now a local contractor states the ducts need changed. Does not heat/cool 2 rooms or the basement. We have 1800 sq ft downstairs and 1800 sq ft upstairs.
What do you think we need?
15-Aug-08 I have 2 two ton Rheem 12sser heat pumps outside and 2 two ton Goodman gas furnaces in the basement. I had some local heating & air companies give me an estimate on setting the system up for dual source heat changing out the thermostate. The Rheem units had originally used the 3/8in copper tubing but when install with the previous gas furnaces they reduced them to 1/4". The Goodman furnaces have the coils that can be used with heat pumps. The repairs guys said the heat pumps with the thermostate can be set up to work as the primary heating source with the new honeywell thermostate and the gas furnaces will become the backup heat for when the temp gets below 35 to 40 degrees. They said we need to remove the old 1/4 " tubing and install the 3/8". The heat pumps have been working for 7 years in ac mode with the 1/4 lines have have worked fine. I agreed to them changing them out since it should be more efficient. After the repair guys left, I noticed they left about 2 to three inches of the 1/4 tubing next to the outside heat pump units but replace the rest of the line. Is this any different than before. It doesn't appear to me we have accomplished anything by changing out the line since we still have a few inches of 1/4 inch line. What should I do? Since the ac works great now and did before with the line between the AC and the furnaces being 1/4 inch is it going to make a difference when we start using the heat pumps in the winter to heat the home.

Thanks for all your help.

Joe
15-Aug-08 I would like to have an air conditioner installed in my 3000 square foot home (two-storey with finished basement)... I am not sure how large of a unit I would need?

07-Aug-08 I have recently had two hvac repairs. One was a 2 ton 13 seer system and the other was a 3 ton 10 seer system. According to tech he put 5 pounds freon in each. Is this reasonable?
05-Aug-08 I have a 1400 square foot single story house with a 3 ton unit and a single 12 x 24 return register. The unit is ~10 years old and is extremely inefficient (runs almost continuously when set at 80 or below). An A/C company recommended that I add another 12 x 24 return register (for a fee, of course) but can't explain the reason for that particular register size. They didn't perform any other diagnostic tests but claimed the unit is fine otherwise. Another company said the register is 'too smal'l and there are duct leaks as well as a coolant leak. What should I do?
04-Aug-08 I recently had an AC issue with the unit making loud noise - York that is about 6 years old. Tech replaced the capacitor and charged me $239 for parts and labor. Is that reasonable? I don't have a clue about HVAC's but the part does not seem all that pricey when googled (approx $30). Any input is appreciated.
28-Jul-08 I am building a new home and the square footage is about 1850sq. ft. it has a full walk out basement 1850sq. ft. I am putting in a goodman electric heat pump with a variable speed motor on the air handler. i have 8 36" by 66" windows across the front of the house and 3 across the back. the house doesn't have any shade around it. should i put in a 3 1/2 ton unit or 4 ton unit.
26-Jul-08 What size trane unit do I need to cool 1200 sq ft house?
24-Jul-08 The A/C unit is too big for the area it's cooling which causes high humidity. I have a dehumidifier running constantly but it's still really humid, usually 60-70%. How can I decrease the humidity?
24-Jul-08 How many tons central air conditioner will I need for a 3300 squar foot home?
22-Jul-08 does anyone still sell/make ductless split system air conditioners (1 ton) using R22
17-Jul-08 What size air conditioner and furnace (blower) do we need for our house?
Our house is one story and we also have a full basement that is 100% finished. Each level is 1464 sq ft, and the upper level also has vaulted ceilings and most the windows (which are probably average in number) are on the north and south sides of the house.
Our current air conditioner (3 ton system) is working with the output at 55 degrees and the coil pressure is standard. The problem we have is that there is not sufficient air flow out of the vents to cool down the house. The system will run 24 hours a day and never cool to the desired temperature. (it will be 94 degrees outside and it will slowly creep up to 84 degrees inside even though we have the thermastat set at 75.)
-Technician suggestions (we have had 3 people take a look)
1st technician-said the condenser was bad so we needed to replace evrything, including the furnace because the blower is not sufficient in size.
-2nd technician-said only the air conditioning part of the system was bad. Wehen we mentioned what the previous tech said, he said he would get back to us after he had completed some calculations to see if the blower was sufficient. He never called us back.
3rd technician-he showed us the temperature and pressure readings and said they are exactly what they should be. "Mechanically, this is operating exactly how I would set up a brand new one." he did acknowledge that the air flow out of the vents seemed slow but has no clue what to do because "a 3 ton system is plenty for this size house."
What do we do?

11-Jul-08 I recently built a 2000 sq.ft home. I have a 5ton Lennox heat pump I will be using in this home. Yes I know the unit is a little big for my needs. If you could help me with this, I would appreciate it.
08-Jul-08 Couple more questions. Would the evaporator system set up for puron be compatable with R22? Does anything in the evaporator need to be replaced to use heat pump?

26-Jun-08 I am having the ducts redone in my home. Currently, I have 6" round diffusers in the ceilings, but I need to have a few more added, according to every consultation I have had. I'm fine with that, but one of the contractors I spoke with told me that I would need to replace the round vents and replace them with rectangular ones. He said that the rectangular ones were more efficient. Is that true? Essentially, it would mean he would have to cut in a new, rectangular hole in every room (two in some...) and then just plug up the 6" round holes somehow. My wife and I both would rather not do that if possible. Thanks so much for your help.
24-Jun-08 I have a 1400 sq. ft. home. What size central heating/ aic conditioning system do I need?
22-Jun-08 I need to build a room inside a warehouse. The room is ~5600sq ft. I need to maintain 68 degrees F and 45% RH 24/7/365. I need to maintain 6 air exchanges per hour on the assembly tables due to the resins that will be used to build composite panels ( s-glass, aramid, ceramic tile) for the defense industry.
This will not be a "classed" clean room. The panels will then be cold pressed for ~ 2 hours until cured in the same room.
What type of hvac system is required to maintain this area.
Thanks,

Tony Maloy
21-Jun-08 what would happen if a 5 ton straight cool condenser is used with a 3 ton air handler with orifice?
21-Jun-08 my Trane A/C unit recently started doing something strange. In cool mode occassionally it turns on the aux heat. during which time it actually heats rather than cools. It will do it while its already running (and cooling) and sometimes at start up. It will stay that way until I trip and reset the breaker(60 amp). If I don't, it will continue and heat up the house. I looked and there is no ice build up to melt. When the cool is working properly, it works great. What is wrong with my system? What can I check or fix? Please help, I can't leave my a/c running while not around to monitor the aux heat light. Last week we had temps in the 100's and this week in the 90's. Money is tight, so I do all repairs here. Is it my thermostat perhaps? Thank you for your time. --cheers, Ken C.
20-Jun-08 I have a 14 by 70 mobile why put in smaller now? home... it has an 80 thousand BTU gas furnace now.. i got a quote for a new furnace and they recommended a 60,000 BTU intetherim furnace... is this big enough and will it heat as well as 80,000? thank you
17-Jun-08 I have a lofted two story house 1919 SF with two HVAC units. My question is I live by myself and want to keep my power bill low so I was closing the upstairs bed rooms and bath room doors. But with the temp outside now in the 90's in S.C and higher I wonder if it to much strain for just one unit. So with that said I have turned on the upstrair unit and opened the doors and closed the blinds and set it to 79 and the down stairs unit on 78. Is this the right thing to do keep both units on and should I set one higher upstairs than the lower unit.

Thank you,

I had a serviceman stop over and he said the relay on the circuit board is shorted. We had a power outage last night, he said that probably had something to do with it, of course he said its probably cheaper in the long run to buy a new carrier unit, i don`t think so, i can`t afford a new carrier right now. From what i told you does it sound like i need to replace the circuit board, if so where is the cheapest place around the states where i can purchase one. Thanks..

30-Oct-07 We have an old, too-big, 18 year-old, inefficient 165,000 btu Luxaire furnace which we would like to replace with a 95% high efficiency, variable speed furnace. Our house is 1800 sf on the main-floor and about 1200 square foot basement. It is a '50s ranch has vaulted, 12' ceilings and lots of floor to ceiling windows (original aluminum ones) and little insullation. We have 3 bids on furnace systems from 3 highly-recommended installers, and all high-efficiency (95%), variable speed furnaces but they range in BTU size from 70,000-130,000.
Two questions. 1. We are completely confused on what size furnace to get and they are such a huge range of sizes, how do we know what size to get? Does the brand affect the number of btu's we should get?

2. The furnace brand is also in question. the brands we have bids on are Luxaire (they recommended a 120,000 btu's), Lennox (the least expensive and with the smallest btu's at 70,000) and Goodman (the most expensive and they suggested 115,000 btu's). Luxaire has the best warranty right now, 10 years parts and labor, so we are leaning towards that bid. Do you have suggestions on brand too?

thanks!!!!!

30-Aug-07 Last August I purchased a new 3-ton condensing unit. Last week my freon was out and the dealer charged me for 10 pounds of freon in this unit.   30-Jul-07 We need to cool a building that is used to service and repair vehicles. This building is 170' x 140' and has 22' side walls and 30' high in the center of the building. We do not know if exhaust fans will reduce the heat to make it fill cooler or if we should do A/C. It will cost about $30,000.00 to install exhaust fans and $89,000.00 for A/C.

We are in West Virginia and have 3 months of very hot and humid weather.

We also would like and idea of the operating costs for A/C

Thanks,
Doug

19-Jul-07 My Trane XR90 unit is leaking water from the bottom of the unit as well as the sides. I have vaccumed out the lines and turned the AC off and just left the fan running to defrrost the condenser if that is the problem. It is still leaking about a cup of water an hour and has done so for 4 day's. How do I check to ensure the sump pump is working ? Were could the water be coming from ? Is there any damage that can be caused by this ?

28-Jun-07 I have a commercial 2 story office with a new separtate AC unit for the uppstairs suite of about 1000 sq.ft. The AC contractor says that 6 7inch ducts &(1 6inch in bath) in ceiling are sufficient, even though area cannot be cooled below 78 degrees if over 85-90 outside. He says that the attic area where the coil is just to hot(even though ridge vent)and that it needs an attic fan. I agree fans help, but I also had another AC contractor come in and he said the fan is not necessary and that a 4 ton unit as this is requires 5 more 7inch & 2 more 6inch vents to make it work properly.   20-Apr-07 Hello,

I have a question about sizing the boiler for my HVAC system.

The old contractor did not do the duct system properly for the HVAC system on my new house - the suppliers and returns are not enough and not balanced, and thus caused a lot of issues. Actually, the old contractor did all 4 houses wrong, all with the similar issues, in a row in my community. We asked the builder to repair it. I asked the new contractor calculated the heat loss for my house and I did the same using some software . The number the contractor came with is about 87 MBtu/Hr (using Wright Soft) and I had about 90 mbtuh from HVAC 4 and 120 mbtuh from HE2 of Slant/Fin.

The boiler in my house now has DOE capacity 88/114 mbtuh with IBR net water heat 77/99 mbtuh. Since the old contractor did not do any good job on the 4 houses, I doubt the boiler they gave us is not adequate. Based on my limited knowledge there is a sizing multiplier, say 1.2 to 1.4 times, to determine the boiler size. Therefore, based on the new contractor's calculation of 87 mbtuh, the boiler need 104 to 121 mbtuh net capacity. Am I right? Is there any industrial standard or guideline on choosing the multiplier?

Thanks in advance for your help.

15-Mar-07 I am in a process to replace my old gas furnace made by day&night. My house has 2,300 sqft and was built in 1986 in San Francisco bay area of California. The old furnace has input of 107,000 btuh. The contractor suggests me a Trace furnace XV80 (80k btuh, 2-stage and DC motor) or XL80 (100k btuh, 2-stage). The XV80 has ECM motor which would save some electricity (cost 25+c/kwh here). I prefer to have XV80 with 100k btuh, but it may not fit my closet according to contractor (17.5 inch wide vs 21 inch wide). Any suggestion if I should install XV80 with 80k btuh or XL80 (100k btuh)? I am worry about the XV80 does not have enough output to warm the house. A advise is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

03-Mar-07 I have a comfortmaker furnace, model RPSII. The system typically works fine, however will periodically go into a mode where it will start the exhaust fan, wait, fire up the flame, burn for the predetermined seconds, turn on the circulation blower, and immediately shut down the flame. The error code blinks 6 blinks, identifying "flame detected" without a call for heat. I know it is calling for heat. It responds favorably to resetting the system (powercycle), and will work fine for days. Then it will repeat the symptom. All elements and sensors seem to be in good working order? What could be the problem?

3) Evaporator Delta P = 0.5 bar

In above mentioned specs, rated or max flow requirement gainst 500 Ton is
mentioned. Please tell me

1) What will be the minimum flow requirement of chilled water through evaporator

27-Feb-07 Two years ago I replaced my heat pump with a Carrier "Purlon" 2 1/2 ton 14 seer heat pump. The house is 1,400 sq.ft. heated, with 10ft ceilings. It has 3 1/2 in batts in the exterior walls and 6 in. blown in insulation in the ceilings. There's a row of insulated metal clad windows about 12ft long facing north east.We are going to add 525 sq ft to the original house with 10 ft ceiling and a longer bank of windows (vinyl clad)and 2 french doors for a total of about 30 of glass with the same exposure. I live in Myrtle Beach, SC. Do I need another heat pump? If so, what size? Does doing 2x6 walls with r-19 batts and adding more insulation in the new attic help as far as letting the current heat pump do the whole job. Thanks for any info you can provide.

  19-Feb-07 Hi,

I am new to the field and hope that I could get an expert opinion from you guys. We have a system here with an old air handler about 22 yrs. During the winter days the system works fine, the temperature is within specifications. But when the outside temp. is above 80 the system is out of specs. I am suspecting that the air handler doesn't put out its' maximum capacity. So, with your expert idea, what can I do to characterize the performance of the air handler? Measure wind velocity, pressure, temperatur raise of the chiller water?? Please help.

Thanks

20-Jan-07 I have a rheem heat pump, the installer put in a 3/8" liquid line installation manual calls for 5/16".

I have heat but no a/c, the when the installer added 410a to get low pressure up for cooling the a/c worked but the high pressure switch tripped, high pressure shot way up so he had to remove the 410a to get the high pressure where it belongs.
But that leaves the low pressure too low so the a/c does not get cold. he left and said he does not know why this is happening.

Could it be the liquid line should be 5/16" not 3/8"? 5/16" is what the manual says. Insatller says it does not matter.

and thanks,
bryan

10-Oct-06 I am a student studying on how to make a 3 story brick veener building on the outside, and 8X8X16 cmu
block on the inside more energy and cost efficient. This is a commerical school (University) building.

The roof of the building was replaced in 2002, and the HVAC motors are running at 90% efficienty.

My question would be is it possible to add some sort of insulation to the block that would decrease the heat loss and pay itself off. Or would that just be a waste?

Is there anything that i could do to make the walls more efficien?

thanks

08-Oct-06 My wife and I recently purchased a small 2 bedroom/1 bath home.
It is approx. 825 SQ. FT.
The kitchen/Livingroom is an open floor plan with an open beam ceiling in the front and conventional ceilings/insulation in the 2 bedrooms.Currently there is a wall mounted "Swamp Cooler" that we want to swap out (in the same opening) for an in wall Air Conditioner. What size A/C (how many BTU's) should we be looking at to at least, thoroughly cool the Living Room/Kitchen area?
That part of the house gets the hot afternoon sun.
02-Oct-06 I am an electrical estimator and I'm constantly asked to size feeders for electric fired HVAC units. Can you give me a formula to calculate these loads for 3 phase 208 volts and 3 phase 480 volts?

21-Sep-06 Sizing ac unit for metal building

I have a 40’x60’ 2500 sq ft metal shop building 11’ at the eaves 14’ at the peak, full 6” insulation with a 10x16 insulated roll down door and 36” walk door, no windows on a 4” bare slab with metal interior liner panel on the walls only. Exterior walls are white, and the roof is galvalume. Building is oriented with the 60’ side facing south, roof ridge runs east/west. There is 1500w worth of florescent lighting and an average of 2hp of motors running much of the time I’m in there, which is from 11am till around 6pm. Location is Clermont, GA elevation 1410’. There are no shade trees within 100’ in any direction. I want a vertical package ac only unit (I have a 40k btu gas heater hung from the ceiling) because of nice small footprint that I can mount outside against the wall with stubby ducts running thru the middle north side of the building so the only thing I will see on the inside of the building is the intake and exhaust grilles on the wall (no duct runs). I would like a name brand unit (single phase power) that I can adjust from recirculated-only air, fresh air mix, or 100% fresh air fan only, with a powerful fan for fresh air mode. I will have the unit on all the time during the hot humid part of the summer so it doesn’t have to cool the shop quickly from very hi temps like it would if it was turned completely off when I was not in the building. It gets cool at night here even during the hot summer, but the humidity is the killer, so I want long cycle times, not oversize. What seer ratings are available for these units? What refrigerant should I get? Just wondering if someone could recommend correct size (3-1/2 ton?) unit for this application, and maybe a model that would be well suited…I want to make sure I end up with the right unit.

Thanks in advance
Tom

30-Aug-06 Hi! I'm working on a school project and I need to know in general how many rtu's are needed to cover an area of 33,705sq ft and 14,975sq ft? How much area would one rtu cover? Can you send me some basic info on the duct and vent system and maybe some basic drawings of the ducts and vents? I really need this today by 3pm if possible, the project is due tonight. Please email me at(jgarza-93@hotmail.com) thank you very much.
24-Aug-06 Hi, I have a 4300 sq ft ranch w/loft home that I have converted into an Assisted Living Home for Seniors. The garage was converted into a mother-n-law suite with large kitchen, living room, bedroom and bath. The LR has a hotel unit that only cools/heats the LR. The other rooms are cold/hot depending on the season. The layout of the home is excellent for my business. However the HVAC is not providing the BTU's to heat/cool the house all over. There is a lot of moisture in the house in the summer and very cold in the winter. So my energy bill are very high. With the additions of ventilations to areas where heat/air is not reaching , what would be the best system for my home and what size and price for HVAC.

Thanks,

Joyce McDougal
23-Aug-06 Hi. I have been having work done on my air conditioning unit at my house. I was told I needed a new evaporator coil and I purchased one and it turns out that my coil was not my problem, but that my main drain was clogged. Now that the new coil is in, it is not charging correctly. I have a 10 seer 4 ton unit and the AC company put in a 13 seer 3 ton coil. They are telling me that the installation of a piston will convert my new 13 seer coil to 10 seer 4 ton.

Is this correct?
23-Aug-06 I am planning to buy a 1500 sf house - front of house has 2 story cathedral ceiling opening to loft - narrow hall connects back to 2 bedrooms. no ductwork, no central air, I'm a 57 y.o. female - help! need to cool it off. How many BTUs? Window A/C? Portable A/C? What is my best option (and brand names with costs would be great too if you know of some that are better). I was thinking of portable a/c but are window units just as good? Want something QUIET if possible, too!

10-Aug-06 Since installing a York Hi efficiency furnace 2 years ago we have not had A/C most of the time. Transformers constantly burn out. The tech says the voltage to our home is too low - 105 to 113 volts. The utility says we are the only people with this problem. Is this consistent with York furnaces? What can we do?

What could be happening over time EVERY morning to make this happen?
01-Aug-06 During routine PM, the A/C guy told me that I need to replace my A/C unit motor run capacitor. It is a 440v 20 UF that is running at 18.3? Would you agree? No problems with A/C. Runs fine. Thank you.

26-Jul-06 I have a 5000 sqft home that uses four seperate central heat/air units. I am interested in installing some kind of whole house hepa filtration system to help with my son's allergies. Will I need seperate filtration units for each central heat/air unit?
21-Jul-06 When we bought these buildings the boiler system they installed seems too big for the building. We pay the heat for tenants and the cost is outrageous in winter. We have two large brick apartments buildings next to each other. Is there a way to make the heat more efficient in the winter months? The radiators have new Danfoss automatic control valves and each radiator has a steam trap which takes the condensed steam and allows it to flow into the boiler. Please give me some suggestions on better heat efficiency.
Thanks

09-Jul-06 I am renovating a commercial home 1,300sqft to be used as a hair salon in North Carolina. I am trying to calculate the A/C requirements. I have installed 10 new (double pane low e)windows. In the past the ceilings have had insulation blown in and it is now 6 inches high, the walls too have blown insulation and a new addition has R15, the floors have R19, two new entry/exit doors- one metal and one solid mahogany. The ceilings are ten feet high and the floors are hardwood. It has german lap exterior siding first, then asbestos siding, and now we installed over all of that a cement siding over entire home. It is basically built like a tank! I was told there is a formula utilized to calculate AC requirements given the above information. I would greatly appreciate information for this calculation and how to calculate. Sincerely, Mark Eskew - a new contractor trying to make a new career path on a very tight project!
06-Jul-06 I am researching AC tonnage requirements for a 30' x 70' store with 14' open ceilings. I prefer open versus standard 10ft drop ceiling grids.
The AC tonnage is estimated at 1 ton per 350 sq feet. Does the AC tonnage requirement double because of the open ceiling?

27-Jun-06 I recently purchased a new home, 2100 sq ft, rancher. The heat pump is a 10 seer unit from Intertherm. The inside unit freezes whenever we try to bring the temp below 76 degrees. The appearance of ice would indicate it should be getting cold, but it doesn't. Then as the unit freezes over it reduces the air circulation.
1) Is this unit the appropriate size for this sized home?
2) And, What could be causing the inside unit to freeze over?
27-Jun-06 I am interested how to calculate the number of btu's required to heat a certain size home - approx 2200 sq. ft - basement and ranch.
27-Jun-06 I have an insured 4Ton GE Model #BWR748A109A1 AC/Ht.Pump.My guess is ay least 20 Years old.

27-Jun-06 I have cooling problem in my plant. We have heat exchanger for cooling hot water with air. Inlet water is about 50°C and in hot days the chiller cant cool water below 40°C. Chiller is consist of 3X1,5kW fans (3x23000m3/h) which eject hot air out of the building. Air gets in the building throw the dust filters. Temperature in the room is above 35°C on the summertime. We will cover the windows with silver foil and the doors with some insolating materials but I need help with choosing air conditioning system. I want to put some industrial air conditioning system which will blow cool air directly to place where chiller sucks air in. I dont know is it possible too cool down the room because there is very big air flow 69000m3/h. Please give me some advice.
26-Jun-06 What would be a ball park figure of the tonnage needed to cool an eight story, 170,000 sq. ft. office building? Building is mostly office space. No kitchens or lounges. We currently have two 360 ton centrifical chillers. I need to take one out of service for repair and need to know if one 360 ton chiller will do. Thanks

20-Jun-06 I had a guy give me an estimate for a 3.5 ton 13 seer central heating and air. It has a heat pump and is a carrier brand. The estimate also included 12 registers and the accompanying ductwork. The price was $12,000. Is this out landishly high or not. My house is low to the ground and he is the only guy that has even given me a number so I have nothing to go by.
20-Jun-06 I have a tenant that wants to add communications equipent to a room that will add approx 10K BTUs of heat. The room is cuurently being provided 130 cfm of tempered air via a branch off a building vav system. My instinct tells me to say they will need supplemental a/c but I'd like to be able to tell them what I have in in tonnage (based on the 130cfm existing) and what they will need additonally. Thank You
16-Jun-06 We are having our kitchen remodeled. The crew has covered an 8 inch circular duct opening with a large (10ft x 15in x 12in) soffit. There intent is to just cut an opening for a register in the soffit. I contend that there should be a duct going directly from the opening to the register so that hot/cold air doesn't fill the entire soffit. Which is appropriate?
12-Jun-06 I am building a 2500 sq ft 2 story house, and the contractor will be installing a 4 ton unit. Is that adequate enough for the size of the home?
08-Jun-06 I live in a new home...just built a year and 5 months ago. I had a HVAC tech come to my home because it has not been cooling...he said I only have 1.5 ton and I should have a 2-3 ton unit. Basically it is not cooling my house. Who is responsible for that?
31-May-06 I live in a duplex, 750 sg ft on each side. My brother had his ac contractor replace the the outside compressor. The contractor left telling to wait several hrs and it would be cool. I did not think the air coming out was cool enough. What should the estimated air temp be, coming out of the duct during ac use? I have tried several times get him to come back no luck. He replaced with a used unit.
29-May-06 Is there something about the design of the York product that makes it less effective than a Carrier unit for a spacepak installation?

I replaced a 10 year old 5T Carrier/SEER 10 with a 5T York /SEER 13 compressor. The compressor is paired with the original UNICO air handler and coil for a spacepak air distribution system.

The new compressor is freezing up; while cool air continues to flow, the York isn't keeping up with warming outside temps.

Note: Refrigerant pressures are within range and holding and, while it was measured, air flow appears empirically to be adequate, as well.
28-May-06 I HAVE A 2000 SQUARE FOOT WELL INSULATED BRICK HOME, SIGNLE STORY HOME IN SOUTH CENTRAL USA. WHAT SIZE CENTRAL HEAT AND COOLING SYSTEM SHOULD I CONSIDER FOR REMODELING A 21 YEAR OLD HOME? ONE CONTRACTOR SAYS 4 TON. WE CURRENTLY HAVE A 3 TON AND HAVE NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE ABILITY TO HANDLE OUR HOUSE. I AM CONSIDERING A TRANE OR LENOX. WHAT IS YOUR SUGGESTION?
25-May-06 Could you give me a ball park figure for replacement of an AC/heating unit for a condominium? There is a unit inside the condo, as well as a unit on the roof. I am not sure as to exactly how the system works, but it does appear that the main components are on the roof.

23-Apr-06 I have an historic home with oil boiler and hot water baseboard heating system. We live in the CT shoreline area and are looking to add central a/c to our home as result of remodeling. How can we find an expert contractor to advise on benefits/costs of either a ductless or high velocity system?
  20-Apr-06 I have a 40 gallon chill tank which I dip hot

13-Apr-06 I have an almost 6 yr old 10seer heat pump that has died. The cost of repairing is just slightly less then replacing it. Since the min replacement has to be at lease 12 seer or higher I was wondering if the is a quick rule to approx figure out the savings as I increase seer. I know the higher the seer the more effiecent but the cost goes up to. If I approx the savings I can better tell what my best option is. I plan to stay in the house for many years. (At least 5 more)
13-Apr-06 I upgraded my new Cadillac STS 8 years ago converting the AC from R22 to R134a.

Can I do the same with a new Carrier SEER 10 Split AC 9000 BTU system?.

I don't care about reduced efficiency or the flamability. do I need to change anything in the compressor. I am an engineer when I looked at the curves it seemed as rthough I might get away with doing nothing. Do you have a contact to ask carrier directly?.

Thanks Tony
26-Mar-06 I have a Carrier 58WAV furnace and have learned that I need to set the gas flow rate to match my elevation. How do I tell what it is set at and how do I adjust?
24-Mar-06 Existing 30 year old 40 story hi-rise with existing 2 pipe a/c/heating system. Pipes are showing corrosion. How can the pipes be changed ? Are there non-corrosive plastic/poly pipes available, if so, do they meet Code?
18-Mar-06 I have a 3600 sq. ft. metal building (new) and the front 1800 has been framed out and insulated. The rear 1800 sq. ft. and area above front is open. Could you suggest tonnage? Our local power company suggested 10 tons. How should the tons be distributed? I would like to go with York units; could you give me an estimate as to what the job should cost? Any answers would be greatly appreciated! By the way, there will be no ductwork for the rear 1800 sq. ft. Thanks again!
27-Feb-06 Is there a standard formula that can be used to determine the btu's needed to heat a warehouse that is used mainnly for moving scrap metal rather than storing it. The warehouse is 152' by 98' and has one door (14x14 that is always open during working hours. The ceiling is 22'7" and the desired temperature is 65 degrees Farenheit.

Thank you,

16-Feb-06 i have my environmental lisence. i would like to get my state lisence so that i might start a small side business. the state regulations say that one has to work for a lisenced company for 3 years prior to test for the state lisence. i have a regular job and cant meet this requirement aeven though i know how to do the work. is there some kind of classes that i can take to get past the experience requirement? i have tried to find out on my own but havent had much luck.
29-Jan-06 I have a 1755 sq ft house. I would like to finish out the 400 sq ft garage for a music room. I currently have a Bryant 661CJX036000AEAA 3 ton heat pump. Can I tie into the existing duct system to cool this room or will it be necessary to install a second unit??

04-Jan-06 I have a home with 12 existing register vents for our oil furnace. We are taking out the furnace and putting in a heat pump. We don't want to do changes to the venting because it would require extensive renovations. I've got quotes from a number of companies, about half suggesting a 3 ton based on about 3000 sq ft, and the other half saying max 2 1/2 ton based to minimize air noise. The arguements seem to be the people pushing 3 ton say 2 1/2 is undersized and won't do the job. The ones pushing 2 1/2 say 3 ton would push 100 cfm per vent and that is too noisy. I live in the pacific northwest, comparable climate is Seattle. We're looking primarily at Trane and Lennox with Seer in the 14 range, HSPF in the 8.5 range. Air handler is variable.
01-Jan-06 I want to add a geothermal system to my Lennox Propane furnace. For this installation, the Geo A coil is in the cold air return leading directly into the furnace. I do not think this heated or cooled air has any more effect than outside air being used in modern tight sealed houses.

A Lennox tech stated this will casue the heat exchanger to have a shorter life due to the temperature of the incoming air! Geo systems are in the range of 55 to 85 F. I think his goal is to sell a new furnace. The operating temperature range is within the typical heating / cooling outside air range. So, I think if he had to do the calculations he would be clearly wrong in his statement.

The Geo system supplier would not warrenty the product because "Lennox" would not approve the installation.

Help thanks Frank
29-Dec-05 Re: Two-zone Water to Air Heat Pump System

I recently replaced the expansion tank on my two-zone Water to Air heat Pump deep well system. The old tank was water-logged and the pump cycled constantly, often "short-cycling" rapidly. Before replacing the tank, when I ordered up heat (or AC) the pump ran the entire time, until the thermostat reached the ordered temperature.
Since replacing the 2 Gallon expansion tank (pressure now set at the correct 28psi) and the 30/50 pressure switch, whose contacts were worn and pitted, when I order up heat, the deep well pump no longer runs constantly, but tends to cycle periodically. The system seems to be making heat okay. Will this hurt the heat pump system, or, with the pump cycling as necessary, is it getting the appropriate volume of well water required to do it's job efficiently?
28-Dec-05 We currently have a 3 ton Payne condensor (2yrs old)and a 3.5 air handler (1996). Our house is approximately 1600 sq ft. We have enclosed a screened porch that is approx 250 sq ft. We would like to duct air to the enclosed room. Would our existing units be sufficient to handle the addl 250 sq. ft?
23-Dec-05 I own a warehouse with an office space in the front. I am replacing the heating and cooling system and have two bids: one bid is for a Trane 15 ton and 3.5 ton roof top units and the other bid is a 15 ton and 4 ton Carrier r-22 10 SEER units. Can you help me compare these products
22-Dec-05 we have a rheem furnace model#rgla-10ea-aa we have a switch on the wall to turn on/off,when it is on it continually blows never shuts off,we have installed a programmable thermostat tested and it is installed and set up correctly as far as i can read,is it normal for heat and fan to work always,or should it cycle on/off as required by settings if this is the case what could be wrong and where could i get a schematic and control diagram on the internet or from you. Thanks David
22-Dec-05 We have a 32 by 80 mobile home in south carolina and we need to purchase a new heat pump. Some dealers tell us we need a 5 ton and some say a 4 ton. How do you figure square footage per ton for a Train 14.5 seer heat pump.
21-Dec-05 We are building a 3400 sq ft house in s.e. MI. We are using cellulose insulation, double pane low e glass windows (many)and have a bonus room as part of the total sq footage.   18-Dec-05 I am the HVAC for a military installation in Northern Calif. I had a Copper FinII installed at one buidling 1,260,000 BTU/HR, 1.2 Pilot W.C., 1.3 W.C. Water pressure, dual piping system, fire-tubed. However, the first and second floor on the same side of the building is not getting cold. The pipes are hot at the boiler room, but once it goes outside under the building, there is no heat on the pipes and I have bled the lines, where only water is coming out of the auto-vents, but still cold water. Can you give me advice on this problem?
18-Dec-05 I am an HVAC Tech at an older militatry installation. It has come time to replace many of the old steam and water boiler systems. Water treatment as never been done. I want to make sure it happens here now. I need to find the formula that I can use to figure out the amount of gallons of water in the closed system to add proper amount of rust inhibitor chemicals. The system has a drip system pot feeder that I am not sure how much chem. to put in the container. Can you suggest the proper formula for the calculation. Thanking you so much.
17-Dec-05 I am a HVAC Contractor and my job was mostly in the service end and seeing that the job was completed. The person that performed all the bidding is not with us any longer due to sickness and now I have be put into his position. My question is : Is there a basic formula used to bid a HVAC replacement or a complete new installation. I have bid a couple of jobs lately, how ever I was very high compared to other bidders that got the jobs. I do not know where to look or who to talk to to get information on how to bid jobs and be sucessful and not be scare to lose money for the company. Copuld you please help? Thanks, JERRY
16-Dec-05 I'm selling my home. The home inspector noticed that the heat pump was coming on with an outside temperature of 10 degrees. He indicated that this was inefficent and that the unit should be checked. When I called the company that installed the system they said since this system was using puron it was OK for it to come on with temperatures that low. Who is right?

30-Nov-05 we are buying a mobile home doubble wide that is 32 by 70 approx 2200 sq foot thermo windows good insulatin in saint louis missouri so we dont end up having the dealer steer us wrong what would you reccomend for tonage in a central ac unit minimum and maximum
29-Nov-05 I am buying a 125 year old house that has just recently (2005) had the furnace replaced with new vent work. I am trying to figure out what size AC unit would be able to be installed, I currently own a 3 ton unit that would be able to be moved to our new location. would this size be efficiant for a 1,800 sq ft. home?
29-Nov-05 My husband is purchasing a 1300 sq. ft. office condo in Phoenix, AZ. The contractor is including a 208-volt system with 1 ton of AC per ea 250 sq ft . HVAC units to be a maximum of 6 tons each. Units to have a 10 or 12 seer rating min. Will this be adequate? The office windows are west facing so summer heat gain will be intense. Is there anything else we should have written in the purchase contract? THANK YOU!!!
27-Nov-05 I am about to purchase a 6-year-old 6100 SF home in southeastern Pennsylvania which has a forced air gas furnace in an inaccesible attic as well as a basement furnace.

There is also central air with the units located outside.

I am cocerned about what I understand to be the small but potential risk (fire and carbon monoxide) with regard to the attic forced air gas furnace which is just above the master bedroom. I am considering the replacement of the attic furnace with a heat pump.

I would appreciate any advice as to whether the heat pump would be the best solution. Please also comment as to the relative risk of an attic furnace. Apart from the 40-50 residential fires in California caused by defective Continental gas furnaces, attic fire risk doesn't seem great. The main concern, I am told, is with carbon monoxide.
Carefully placed monitors should provice some reassurance.

Thanks in advance for any advice or comments relating to these matter.

Sincerely,

J.B. Ager
20-Nov-05 I have a 50,000 sq ft warehouse with insulated walls and ceiling. The ceiling height is 30'. I am a wine distributor in Florida and am trying to find a contractor who wants to install a cooling system for the warehouse and offices that are being built into the warehouse. How do I calculate what kinds of tonnage I will need to keep the warehouse at 65 degrees?

17-Nov-05 I have a Comfortmaker furnace, I don't know what year, but it's blowing cold air out when I turn it on and the pilot light won't light. It's an automatic one. If the thermostat is on fan, air blows through the vents. If it's on auto, no air comes out of the vents, but it's running. Do you have any advise on how to get the pilot light to work?
16-Nov-05 Sir, I work in a physics lab 2300' underground. since we shut off one of our experiments, our smaller hall( 45'x250'x40') has been cooling down. We are pumping +/- 6000 cfm of 50 F air into the lab. I would like to install duct heaters, but do not know how many watts I would need to bring the air to 70 F. Can you help? Our intake is a single 36" round duct.

18-Oct-05 We have replaced an existing chiller unit(York model-ycaz33jd346, Serial#-ydam892389 with a new Zarsky Water Chiller Model-ACWC-600-EST and would like to do a comparative analysis of efficiency ratings. What is the efficiency rating of York model-ycaz33jd346
  18-Oct-05 Background-
I'm looking at cooling some electronics gear. The electronics is in a sealed box about the size of a suitcase. The thermo folks say it will need 30,000 Btus of cooling. I want to do a sanity check on this but don't know enough about thermo (it was 25 years ago) to do it.
Givens-
BTUs = 30,000
Flow = 25gpm
Temp out of cooler (into box) = 65degF
Pipe size = 1/2" copper

Like I said, I don't need exact values, just a sanity check. I tried calculating delta T using Watts = (DT * K)/Ts/L then determine #gallons for this DT, then how much pipe to hold said gallons but I got stuck on step 2.
Can you help??

07-Oct-05 I am trying to determine the right size boiler for my house. It's about 1000 sq ft in the heated basement and 1000 sq ft on the main floor. I've gotten 3 professional opinions. They disagree on the # of BTUs: 100, 145 or 175. How do I know how many BTUs are enough?
03-Oct-05 we have a 2160 sq ft house "split type" master on one side rest of bedrooms on other side. Unit in garage in rafters, what size unit should we actually have. Currently we have 3 ton and it isn't getting job done. Runs incessantly. Same with heating. Thanks. Margie

27-Sep-05 I am trying to compare the cost of operation vs. the cost of application of two heating systems. I need to choose between an 80% oil furnace at todays prices and forced air electric. Is there a web site or simple formula that I can use to see how much heat each system will give me for every dollar I spend? For example, how may btu's of heat will I get per penny or dollar from each system at current rates??? I know oil has been much better in the past but I'm not sure about now. A few years back when I asked this question I was shown a calculation that put the electric at about 600 btu's per penny and the 80% oil at about 1150 btu's per penny. I need to know if it's still about the same percentage of difference today as it was then.
Thank you
25-Sep-05 I have a business and the space I rent has a pump style heating/air conditioning system. The past year about every 30 days the temp. doesn't really cool down, in fact, the system won't come on unless I flip the electrical box switches on and off then it might cool a bit and shut down. What maintenance has been doing is putting in more freon as there seems to be a loss of freon ... but the big question where is the freon going? There is no evidence of oil leaking ... maintenance thinks it is going back into the "water loop" ... whatever. I worry that since it's a gas it's going into the environment. I don't think they understand the problem .... I hope you do!! Thank you.
23-Sep-05 Does any "expert" ever answer any question?
23-Sep-05 I just bought a house that uses several TRANE products for the heating and cooling. They are:

Gas Furnace/Air Handler
Model: GUAGA08C
SN: 3G 06416
Type 174-294-1B

Split system Evaporator
Model: EAUB-30C-A
SN: 4D-160-SS
Type: 169 467 2A

Outside Air Conditioning unit
Model RAUB-302-D
SN: 3M 16437
Type: 169-0533-5A

I have a home warrantee that covers this unit however now that it is broke they are trying to deny the claim. They state that the air conditioning system was not properly installed. However the installer was Trane home comfort and that makes sense because it is all Trane products, center. I think they went out of business because all the numbers I have for them are disconnected. I can find no information in this GUADA-08C furnace that the insurance company claims it a heat only unit two contractors both agreed it is a heat only unit but one says yes it can be modified to work with air and one says it is not right. The contractor that says yes it can be made to work also noted that the Insulated Suction Line is made of some rubber or plastic and should be made of copper. I am not finding any information of this plastic/rubber Insulated Suction Line in my research however was told by the contactor that it was an experimental item and much cheaper than the copper line. In your option would this alternate suction line be considered wrong or an improper installation (just the use of this line not the actual installation of it) Thank you so much in advance for any information you might be able to provide.

Respectfully -J
23-Sep-05 I work in a hospital. I am looking for ways to reduce airflows in patient rooms. My interruption of the AIA Hospital Guidelines is that it is OK to do this providing when the room is occupied the required number of air changes is restored (also that the required direction of the airflow between the adjacent rooms is not compromised, irrelevant to my question). Would it be possible to or has anyone used occupancy sensors in this manner.
16-Sep-05 I have 3, 20 ton 10 year old air RTU's on my main building. We have had quite a few repairs this year and the units are now working great but my operations guy tells me we need to replace all 3 and the cost will be approx $50,000. Is there a formula available to take the run time, seer, age etc. of both old and new and do a comparison to show that buying new ones would have have to long of an ROI or that they are so efficient that we need to quit repairing the currnet units and go a head and replace them?
13-Sep-05 I have a Rheem HVAC system with 3 water cooling towers and 18 heat pumps that was installed in 1985. The cooling towers and their pumps are outside, and the heat pumps are inside, just below the roof of the one story building that it is located in. It's not working well at all. I'd like to repair it, but if the system is so old that I just need to replace it, that is what I'll do. Is this system at the end of its normal life span? What is the life span of one of these systems? Thanks for your help.
11-Sep-05 I live in Houston, TX and my house is 1556 sq ft. I have two west facing windows and two east facing. When I purchased the house the people had a 5 ton unit in and the comfort level was miserable. I had the unit replaced with a Ruud 3.5 ton unit with a 13 efficiency rating. Now everyone is telling me this unit is too big as well which is why my light bill is so high, but this is the size three different companies recommended. Is the unit too big for the size house I have? I keep it set on 75 degrees and it's comfortable. Also, how do you calculate the tonnage needed? Thanks foryour help.
10-Sep-05 I have a plastic injection molding business. We are moving to a new plant and would like to caluculate what size water storage tank I would need for cooling water. The injection presses use a total of 297gpm. I have a 60 ton chiller. 2" supply line and a 3" return line. I want to keep the water between 65 and 90 degrees. Is there a rule of thumb for storage tank size for the water.

  31-Aug-05 Hi!

I have a few questions about BTU. I want to calculate the BTU of my equipments (fancoils). I have two temperature sensors. One for the supply air temperature and the other for the room temperature.Somebody give me the formula BTU = constant*(Troom-Tsup)*CFM, but we have problems, dued the filters. If the filters are dirty, they changed the values drastically. Why a dirty filter can change my values? Could I use another method (or formula)? The problem is that my boss does not want to buy BTU meters and I must to find a solution.

Thanks and regards

Robert
30-Aug-05 Looking at a new home, 2200 sqft with a standard 12 seer A/C. This builder has a 13 and 15 seer options. What is the anual costs for each seer rating and the percentage of savings between each seer rating. The home is located in Phoenix Arizona. The option costs for the 13 seer is approximately $3850 and the 15 seer is $3465 as listed on the option sheet from the builder.

Thanks in advance for your response,

21-Aug-05 I am just curious where I can find information regarding my situation. I am a commercial truck driver. I started having problems with my air conditioning unit. The air would quit working.....then they would just fill it back up with freon. They said they couldnt find the leak..but there was no more freon. I started getting headaches, body aches, blurry vision, and was VERY fatigue. I started having to take "power naps" just to make it down the road. I then became where my voice was hoarse sounding...like I had the flu or something. The doctor my work sent me to...contributed this to freon exposure. There are no "experts" in this field that I know of. Are you able to tell me what freon exposure does to a person? Thanks in advance!!

15-Aug-05 My furnace just gave out & was replaced with a new one that upgraded my blower fan to 5 tons. I have a 3 ton Carrier condensing unit that is 5 yrs old. Right after installation the condenser wouldn't go on & the mechanic replaced the switch. About 1 week later the condenser wouldn't shut off. While waiting for my mechanic to get back from vacation I simply shut off the condenser at night to keep the pipes from icing up. After about 5 days of this the thermostat went & I replaced it but to no avail. The A/C won't run until the mechanic arrived the next day & again replaced the switch & now we're all thinking there's a short somewhere but the mechanic is back off on vacation & said he'll look when he gets back. I went one more week & then the entire unit just stopped working. When a just set the thermostat just to run the fan I also get nothing.
My question is how do I tie in the furnace replacement with the condenser failure? The mechanic never got close to the unit when he was doing the furnace work and swears one has nothing to do with the other. I'm skeptical. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

12-Aug-05 We are putting on a 900 square foot addition for some dog runs at our shelter and are hoping to get a heat pump donated from Rheem in our town. They can't seem to calculate the tonnage unit we need...don't know why, but apparently, we need to do that. I've called a local HVAC person who is not responding. Can you or someone do this calculation? The building will be concrete. We need to have a min 8-12 air exchanges per hour. There will be two doors--one interior and one full steel exterior and possibly two windows covering an area no larger than 4x6'. The roof will be vented. The ceilings are 8 feet high. What else do you need to know?
