I'm looking for a good comprehensive energy auditing and management software where I input all of the variables such as wall thickness and materials, inside and outside temps, square footage, internal heat loads, etc. to then calculate heat loss. But I want it to cover all areas of energy use such as lighting, HVAC, boilers, chillers, insulation, etc. In other words to do a comprehensive energy audit but where I do not have to perform the calcs by hand but I supply all of the inputs. Everything a certified energy manager would need to conduct a broad range on energy calcs. Does this exist as a single package or do I need to purchase each module individually - ie HVAC, buildings, lighting, boilers, etc. Thank you |

I have a 10 month old 2 1/2 ton central air and heat package unit. Prior to my old unit breaking down my mobile home would get cold inside. Now on a 90 degree day my inside temp is between 80 and 85 in the coolest area of the home. When the unit was installed the freon line was punctured and repaired. Is it possible that there is a slow freon leak. The temp coming from the floor vents is approximately 64 degrees and just isn't cold enough to cool down the home. Is 64 degrees an acceptable temperature coming into the home from the vents? |

What type of refrigeration equipment do I need (BTU'S, Horse Power, Etc.) for a walking cooler that measures 23'x30', and 16' high? My walls and roof are made with 2"x6", with a 1/2"OSB on the outside, and 1/2" CDX plywood on the inside, the core is filled with 5 1/2" whtite polyestirene blocks; the exterior it is inside of a warehouse that has an ambient temperature of 100 degrees. None of the walls are exposed to the sun.
I would like to maintain a temperature of 32 degrees. We have 3 phase (208) electrical service available

I am a electrical contractor in the stste of califorina, and i am trying to save the owner money on his exterior lighting system. What is the proper way to install a Time Clock, Photo Cell to be operational. Here is how i have it installed circuit breaker 110 volt 20 amp, to line side of time clock, to line side of photo cell, the load side of time clock, to load side of photo cell, to contactor (same circuit)is this correct. The reason i installed it this way is because if the time clock has the wrong time on it, the lights wont turn on untill the photo cell lets it, or if the photo cell goes bad, the time clock will still turn the parking lights on. |

How do I calculate the "rated Input BTUh" to select the right propane 90+ efficient boiler for my new house?
Specifics: 2" styrofoam sheathing (R10 value) and 2" spray foam insulation (R12) on the inside.
In - (1.5" concrete) floor hydronic heating, adequate loop coverage in 9 separate zones.
Passive solar heating house design with a lot of casement - eneglass windows on the Southern exposure. 3 occupants, two story house plus a basement that will not be used much.
Square footage: 2 floors+garage = 3,400 sq.ft + 1,460 in basement - may be used as an in-law suite at some point. (Total 4,900 Sq. ft.).
The Buderus GB142 boilers I am looking at use a modulator for "heating as it is needed" operation.
I am trying to decide between models with 106,900 and 160,900 Rated Input BTUH.
The first one at 122/86 F degrees has a Rated Output BTUH of 30,700-102,400 while the 2nd one 47,200-158,000.
How do I calculate my BTU needs? would the 2nd (higher) model be an overkill and therefore less efficient? (besides more costly to buy).
House is by the Atlantic coastline, North of Portland, ME.
Thank you. |

I want to purchase a generator for emergency use at my home. I have a heat pump that is on a 60A - 240V breaker. I know how to calculate (watts = Volts X Amps). I am guessing the 60A circuit is never fully loaded. Is there a general rule regarding heat pumps / furnaces that I can use to calculate what the full load is? I want to be able to run the heat pump, but want to be sure I do not overload the generator that I purchase. |

I am the maintaince director of a small school in western nebraska. We are looking at updating our existing hvac system which is rooftop units with hotwater heat. We currently do not have AC but will have when were done updating. We also are adding some new classrooms. Our mechanical engineer is really pushing geothermal. My question is what is the real payback vs a convetional rooftop units. Our current annual fuel cost is around 50 grand a year. It seems to me at over a million dollars more for geo its going to be a long payback? |

I have a 130,000BTU boiler and I may convert to an electric boiler but I don't understand the relationship between the 2 measures as doing astraight conversion you come out with 38+KW and that's far too big a ifgure for the boiler I should need. What do I need and why? I am also trying to find up to dtae comparison for heating costs for oil and electricity as with the huge oil cost increase I think that the 2 fuels must have got closer now even with the elctricity increase. Do you know any recent figures? Thanks |

I would like to know how I can determine the BTU's necessary to heat my home efficiently. I am going to install either a Buderus oil boiler or Buderus gas furnace and do not want to overestimate the size of the boiler or furnace. I have received four different estimates and each company has recommended a different size unit. Whom do I trust? |

I had bought a skyline doublewide in 2001. It had a miller forced hot air propane furnace, model number m1bc066gas. in 2002 a heating and cooling company came out and installed an ac coil and exterior unit outside. my problem is that it blows air out from the bottom of the unit. the ac coil is not connected to the floor of the furnace, is this correct? the water lays in the drain pan. this causes mold. i proped up the drip pan with boards so the water can drain, but it causes more of a gap then before and blowes more air out the bottom. my friend and my dad are handymen, but not sure what to do. i don't have the funds to hire a certified tech. what can they do? thank you for any help. |

I've been told on numerous occasions that running a piece of equipment at 480vt 3-PH using a step down transformer(to 240) is much more efficient and adds Cost Savings than running the same equipment at direct 240vt 3-PH. Is this True or Myth? Any idea on the percentage of savings?

Hi, I usually heat my home with pea coal, and use my gas hot water furnace for supplement heat on very cold days. But this year we wanted to switch to a vented gas space heater. I have found the Rinnai and Reznor brands. Rinnai is quite expensive, but seems to be tops. The Reznor is lots cheaper but also sounds good. Can you recomend me a good brand?
My house is a bi-level 55x30 and the 2 car garage(part of the house) is 25x25. I would want to use this vented heater for my main heat and use my gas hot water furnace to supplement for very cold days. How many BTU's do you think I would need? I replaced all my windows 7 years ago with argon double insulated windows. Does it even seem worth the effort to save gas this way?
I live in Orange County, NY.
Thank you for your attention to my question.. |

Cooling towers can generally return cooled water that is warmer than the wet-bulb temperature by something on the order of 5 to 10 degrees F.
Is it possible to use one cooling tower to cool water to 10 degrees above wet-bulb, and then use that cooled water to pre-cool air for a second cooling tower? By passing the water and air to be cooled through a radiator like heat exchanger, the air entering the second cooling tower would have a lower wet-bulb, and could then produce cooler cooled water.
Thanks,
Dick Mills |

We live in North Georgia. Today the temperature is 91 degrees. We have been in our house 1 year and have a Ruud Achiever Series Heat Pump, Model UPNK-036JAZ 13.0 Seer AC Unit. Our home is about 2200 sq (ranch) on a full basement. We keep our thermostat on 76. The air kicks on around noon and never cuts off until around 8 or 9 at night. It usually can maintain 76 in the house but if I lower the temperature it cannot keep that lower setting during the day. We had company over the weekend and I lowered the thermostat to 74. It could not cool the house lower than 77. Is this normal?
Thank you for any advice... |

I am a Student from a chemical engineering background, currently learning and working with a team of research group on the usage of solar thermal technology specifically :The use of SOLAR CONCENTRATING PANELS WITH EVACUATED VACUUM TUBES to heat water supplied in heat exchangers through out a crude oil processing plant. The current method in suppling warm water for heating purposes utilizes steam. An idea of reducing the current use of steam thus resulting some amount of savings to reduce the monthyly plant operation cost is the objective. Thus the idea of using solar power to maybe cowork with steam in supplying hot water had beed an area we are trying to reserach upon.Even so this idea might be out of a question for some, but we are still at a stage of trying to work out a feasibility study on this.My question is:
1. Has this type of solar thermal technology been manipulted for this type of usage( in crude processing plants) done anywhere so far in the world?
2. Our main concern is trying to reduce the payback periods involved, increase returns and increasing the efficiency of the solar and heat use.Whats the best option in realizing this goal from material selection to making it work?
Your advice on this would be very much appreciated..Thank You |

How much energy is used in the manufacturing of one CF lamp? I can't find any information on the process and was wondering if anyone could help me start an investigation. The ballast electronics alone require more resources (variety not quantity) than a traditional incandescents. I was wondering if the energy used in the whole process (from materials mining, transportation, manufacturing of components and subsequent shipping, and final assemebly) truly is less than that of an incandescent (over time naturally). |

A large portion of our business uses floresent lighting, the owner of this establishment(in her 90's) goes around continually flipping off lights. Usually they have to be turned right back on in a matter or minutes. What is the most economical way to use floresent lighting..I have understood that it takes more energy to turn them on than it takes to burn for several hours, plus wear and tear on swithes, starters (if applicable) and ballasts. Can you give me an idea how long an average flor. light needs to be off before it would be worth turning off? I have heard 3 to 4 hours. Thanks, Randy McCarty of McEvoy Funeral Home, Inc. We are current seperating property and buildings do to a sell-off of one business entity.
The new owners have installed a watthour meter in
a 1200 amp, 480v 3phase switch supplying power to our facility. Each feeder has 3 650mcm cables
tied to it for a total of nine power feeders. They claim that they take the reading from there
watthour meter and multiply it by (x) 3 to come up with an aggregate amount of total wattage, and then multiply that by the going rate of.089 cents per kilowatt, is this right? The amount
seems way out of line.
Thanks,

We have a waste water slurry pump system to tailings dams offsite with multiple outlets to the tailings dams where slurry is dumped at differen times to balance slurry level in dam.
Due to the size of the tailings dam delivery head differs substantially to the extend tat deluvery to furthest outlet requires 6 slurry pumps in series to deliver.
At nearest point we currently utelise one of the 6 pumps whilst thw other 5 pumps are disconnected but still in fluid line, resulting in offline pumpsand motors being rotated by throughflow of slurry.
What is the potential for energy savings if we install a single pump bypass system to deliver to the nearest outlet witout passing through the offline pumps?
Your reply will be appreciated

There are two questions on your site regarding EASI (Energy Automation Systems Incorporated). So it appears that this company is generating some intrest from investors and potential cusotmers. I have a single wide 16x80 Fleetwood trailer home with a 1 1/2 ton central HVAC system. Last year we found a condensation leak in the unit closet. Our solution at that time was to put a drip pan in the closet and cross our fingers. We thought the finger crossing worked because this year the leak was no where to be found. We have now found our floor vents to be holding approximately 2 inches of water. Where did we go wrong? Could it be last years leak has appeared again in a different spot and is filling up our vents? |

What size capacitor would I need to install in a sign light box, that consists of 48x58watt daylight fluorescent tubes.Ballasts are standard wire wound atco's.The current draw on this sign is 28amp.Going by atco's specs a 58w tube needs a 6uf cap to give 0.9 power factor.I am trying to avoid having to put 48 caps across each tube to obtain a good power factor.
Would this lower the current draw of the sign so we could run smaller cable to the sign? |

I live on the third floor of a one bedroom apartment that is 600 SF and my electric bill is over $150.00 every month. We don't use much electricity and hardly ever turn on our heat or a/c unless it is unbearable. Our water heater is electric, I don't know if that helps to know. I don't understand why our bill is so high. Could an electric company like Dayton Power and Lights be cheating us? Does someone else in the apartment complex have the ability to use our electricity? There are a couple of things that may be a causing factor:1.) Our windows don't have a great seal 2.) I don't know how old our filters are and 3.) The building was prob. built in the late 70's or early 80's. Please help, it's driving me crazy and I don't know what to do.

Is 3 phase cheaper to use? When you read the meter and it says I used 20 KWH for that month , is the electric company justified to multiply that by 40 ? To say I used 800 KWH for that month?
Are they justified to charge a DEMAND Fee? And say it's because it spikes to turn on the piece of equipment? Thanks

Hi, A guy we had never seen before came into our office last week and said he would do a free energy check. When he was finished he told us we had old T12 lighting and said we should change it for T8. Will this really save us power?
Also he said we should have a motion sensor for each lighting fixture. He said the power company might give us a rebate for the sensors, but it still seems a lot of money because they are around $60.00 each and we have about 215 lighting fixtures. My boss was also worried about the lights going on and off in the showroom and she asked me to try and find out more.
Can you help please? Appreciate any help we can get.
Thanks,
Linda |

I am selecting a home standby generator and need to know the KW required for two 2 1/2 ton outside compressors. The home itself, other than the compressors needs 10.5 KW for start up. I have been told that 12KW is sufficient to start two 2 1/2 ton compressors which would total 22.5 KW. I have considered ordering a 25KW generator. Do these estimates seem reasonable? |

Hello, I recently added a sunroom of 15X15 and decided to install a 17000 btu heat/air unit (with a 220 outlet) instead of having this room added to the existing central heat/air unit. My first electric bill was extremely high and the kwh usage went from 2190 the prior month to 4687. My question-Will the use of this unit cause such an increase or should I be looking at other areas like wiring or maybe the breaker box is overloaded? Can you please give me some direction for corrective actions? |

I live in an approximately 1200sf ranch style home in near Atlanta, Ga. My HVAC is very old. It is a furnace/split system. Last summer, the a/c compressor went out. This winter my heating(gas) bill for november (relatively mild)will be over $300. I estimate my gas bill for jan to be $500-$600. I plan to replace my entire system in spring when it warms up. What is the best route to go economically: Heat pump with gas furnace; Heat pump with electric strip heat? I know the heat pump will cool in the summer, but i heard they don't work too well in the winter? What is the most economical invertment? Thanks |

I recently purchased a 1,400-sq-ft cabin, with a half-loft, in the mountains of Colorado (approx. 9,000 ft elevation). Presently it is a shell to which I am insulating and installing a combination of drywall and tongue-and-groove wood. One wall is mostly windows.
I am considering heat sources to maintain 45F during the winter months to prevent water pipe freezing and drywall from cracking when we are not there. A woodburning stove will heat the space when we are in residence.
Question is what type of heat to use. I have eliminated forced air due to noise. Base board heat seems the way to go. But electric, oil-filled or ceramic? Also, how many do I need? |

I am looking for some help on calculating the btu rating of an air conditioner. For Ex. a solid state (TE based) air conditioner that cools 22 cfm of air 22 degrees below ambient equals what btu rating? I don't know what other data is needed or if I even have it, but the whole unit draws 290 watts with 204 watts going towards cooling. Ambient air say 80 degs with 50% humididty. Is there an equation that I could use to figure out what the btu rating would be? Also in there to calculate efficiancy based off of these numbers. Thankyou |

Hello
I just need a rough estimate here. I am the Fitness Director at a YMCA. We are trying to cut down on energy costs like everyone else.
We ahve a gym with 20 lights 250 watts
GE MulitVapor lamp Bulbs
By closing it for 6 hrs per day...do you know roughly how much money we would be saving or is it definitely worth keeping the lights off
to save money
Thanks Mike Fleming |

Our local ice arena has 42 400W mercury vapour lamps. Our demand peaks seem quite a bit higher then the rated load. Approximately how much extra power is required at startup. Each breaker controls 7 lights. Would it make sense to light each row with an interval (say 1 minute)in order to keep our demand load lower and reasonable. Sorry if this sounds too obvious. In closing, would mercury halide lamps be cost effective replacements.
Thanks

Hi,
We live in Maine and are looking into outdoor wood furnaces as an alternative to oil. Models range from 115,000 BTU's per hour to 3.5 million BTU's per hour. Can you give a estimate of the BTU's required as a function of square footage of the home? And are there other variables besides square footage that would come into play?
Thanks. |

I am about to begin a 2 year graduate program in Energy Management. This is a late in life career change for me. I do not have an undergraduate engineering background, but I have been reading extensively about energy technology, policy, and economic issues for 4 or 5 years. I am wondering if someone has an idea of what types of jobs and salaries I can expect to be able to get when I graduate. Almost all of the energy management jobs I have found posted on websites expect the candidates to be engineers. Are there jobs available in the industry for someone with an MS in EM, but no engineering degree or PE license? Thanks in advanced. |

An art gallery is planning to retrofit incandescent trak lighting to a newer system. Discussion ensues - halogen vs full spectrum flourescents along with a redo of some of the original flourescents bay tube ceiling fixtures. Cooling is a problem in the building during summer - is there a way to calculate the range of heat produced from the halogens vs flourescents so that we could determine if the location has enough power to operate all elctricity needs and figure out if we are just operating our cooling system for the lighting if we use halogens? How do you compute the heat output and equate it to cost and consumption of energy. many thanks, d. |

I am looking for information (tips and trips)of the merits of conservation through voltage reduction at the utility service point to facilities. Premise is that voltage provided to a facility is significantly higher than the voltage requirement of the largest single piece of equipment. Reduce voltage, watts are reduced. Voltage standards by the utility are 480V +/-5%. Actual measured service is 493V +/- 2-3%. Largest piece of equipment is 460V (code rated +/-5%). Math works, why isn't it widely applied?

hi I work for the university of Minnesota nad i am a student there i work in the heating plant and we use a 1984 coal fired boiler boiler they intend to build us a new plant as we have 3 old boilers they are to remove. we put out only about 30,000 lbs /hr and they are thinking they want to refurbish the 1984 and install a gas fired package boiler for reserve. they claim it is cheaper. so my question is is gas cheaper after 20 years or where does the cost of building and the cost of fuel and operation meet

My question is concerning DC offsets in power measurement systems. I'm trying to design an electronic power metering device that will measure current and voltage and calculate W, VAR, etc. The A/D converter I'm using offers optional high pass filters on both the current and voltage channels to remove DC from each signal. From my calculations it seems that by removing the DC component of either channel (I or V) the DC should be removed from the power (W). But after further review this seems to only be true if both signals are pure sine waves. From my understanding the waveforms current and voltage waveforms will usually be anything but pure sinewaves under different load conditions. So my question is what DC component does the power company want to measure, if any? |

A general question from an end-user:
My recent experiences with brand-new HVAC systems have been astonishingly negative: in a brand-new building in an office park in Southern California, and in an otherwise well-done retrofit of new offices to an 80-year-old historical landmark building in western Pennsylvania.
In both cases the HVAC systems have been awful. No one could get them to run properly (either too hot or too cold, > 80 F or < 70, which is too cold for deskbound office workers). In addition the airflow was very high, and constant. It seemed that a LOT of energy must have been wasted. However, since the systems were installed (and the maintenance contract is held) by different parties than pay the electric bills and use the space...
So my question is, how typical is this experience? Do these installlations require an EE degree to run properly, could that be our problem? Finally, what can an end-user do?
Many thanks, and any information would be very much appreciated.

The company I work for has about 350 employees and all have either personal fluorescent desk lamps or an office with two or more ceiling lights made up of 4 fluorescent bulbs each. One of our associates came up with the idea that if each individual turned their light or lights off when they are out of their space (either for lunch or gone for at least one hour), that the company would save an average of $13 per light per year. Is this even close to being true? I thought it took far more power to turn a flouorescent light on thatn to keep it on?
Thanks for you response in advance. |

I have completed 4-year fulltime course in Energy Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, India 12 years ago (B.Tech.with Honours) and joined Energy Management Department of an Integrated Steel Plant in the same year. In the meantime I have completed MBA in Financial Management by correspondence. Where can I find suitable placement with my background? Do I need to upgrade myself professionally to suit International recruiters? If yes, then how? |

I work for a Steel mill that uses a tremendous amount of electricity for its electric arc furnace to melt scrap steel. We melt steel at night to avoid peak demand because of the cost. We have been doing this for 6 months and many of the workers want a chance to work a normal day shift, but it would cost the plant an additional 25,000 dollars per month to do this. Is there any possible solution to make running a day shift feasible. Thank You for any response. |

This question relates to Smart Building Technology and control Systems Integration. Has anyone manufactured products utilizing wireless "mote" technology (as defined by DUST Inc.) for building automation, energy management, power management, security et.al. applications at this time? What is the operating platform by which the systems are integrated when utilizing "mote" technology? Is there product and integration software in the pipeline if it is not yet marketed? |

I would like a source for really good, detailed control sequence descriptions. I am having trouble with control contractors providing inadequate programming with thier systems, and I would like to become familiar with, and be able to reference good sources of automatic temperature control sequences. For example, how to reset mixed air temperature (based on what parameters) for a contant volume air-handler during air-side economizer operation.
Another example is, how to utilize air-side economizer on an existing multi-zone unit while eliminating or minimizing reheat.
Sources for good central plant control would be helpful too.
Thanks in advance

I have been thinking to develop a better and stronger position in my professional career but my background is not on energy. As an Economist I would like to develop a new business in Uruguay where energy management has not been descovered yet as a good business opportunity. Considering this limitation, could it be possible to learn and work on this interesting field? What course should I take and where? Best places to learn? Best suggestion about how to begin? Should I become an engineer to be able to develop this business in my country? Possible companies to make a partnership? Sorry for this difficult question? |
