Here is how i have it installed circuit breaker 110 volt 20 amp, to line side of time clock, to line side of photo cell, the load side of time clock, to load side of photo cell, to contactor (same circuit)is this correct. The reason i installed it this way is because if the time clock has the wrong time on it, the lights wont turn on untill the photo cell lets it, or if the photo cell goes bad, the time clock will still turn the parking lights on.

22-Nov-08 How do I calculate the "rated Input BTUh" to select the right propane 90+ efficient boiler for my new house? Specifics: 2" styrofoam sheathing (R10 value) and 2" spray foam insulation (R12) on the inside. In - (1.5" concrete) floor hydronic heating, adequate loop coverage in 9 separate zones. Passive solar heating house design with a lot of casement - eneglass windows on the Southern exposure. 3 occupants, two story house plus a basement that will not be used much. Square footage: 2 floors+garage = 3,400 sq.ft + 1,460 in basement - may be used as an in-law suite at some point. (Total 4,900 Sq. ft.). The Buderus GB142 boilers I am looking at use a modulator for "heating as it is needed" operation. I am trying to decide between models with 106,900 and 160,900 Rated Input BTUH. The first one at 122/86 F degrees has a Rated Output BTUH of 30,700-102,400 while the 2nd one 47,200-158,000. How do I calculate my BTU needs? would the 2nd (higher) model be an overkill and therefore less efficient? (besides more costly to buy). House is by the Atlantic coastline, North of Portland, ME. Thank you.

I am going to install either a Buderus oil boiler or Buderus gas furnace and do not want to overestimate the size of the boiler or furnace.   09-Feb-08 I had bought a skyline doublewide in 2001. It had a miller forced hot air propane furnace, model number m1bc066gas. in 2002 a heating and cooling company came out and installed an ac coil and exterior unit outside. my problem is that it blows air out from the bottom of the unit. the ac coil is not connected to the floor of the furnace, is this correct? the water lays in the drain pan. this causes mold. i proped up the drip pan with boards so the water can drain, but it causes more of a gap then before and blowes more air out the bottom. my friend and my dad are handymen, but not sure what to do. i don't have the funds to hire a certified tech. what can they do? thank you for any help.

08-Oct-07 Hi, I usually heat my home with pea coal, and use my gas hot water furnace for supplement heat on very cold days. But this year we wanted to switch to a vented gas space heater. I have found the Rinnai and Reznor brands. Rinnai is quite expensive, but seems to be tops. The Reznor is lots cheaper but also sounds good. Can you recomend me a good brand? My house is a bi-level 55x30 and the 2 car garage(part of the house) is 25x25. I would want to use this vented heater for my main heat and use my gas hot water furnace to supplement for very cold days. How many BTU's do you think I would need? I replaced all my windows 7 years ago with argon double insulated windows. Does it even seem worth the effort to save gas this way? I live in Orange County, NY. Thank you for your attention to my question..

03-Aug-07 Cooling towers can generally return cooled water that is warmer than the wet-bulb temperature by something on the order of 5 to 10 degrees F. Is it possible to use one cooling tower to cool water to 10 degrees above wet-bulb, and then use that cooled water to pre-cool air for a second cooling tower? By passing the water and air to be cooled through a radiator like heat exchanger, the air entering the second cooling tower would have a lower wet-bulb, and could then produce cooler cooled water. Thanks, Dick Mills

28-Jun-07 We live in North Georgia. Today the temperature is 91 degrees. We have been in our house 1 year and have a Ruud Achiever Series Heat Pump, Model UPNK-036JAZ 13.0 Seer AC Unit. Our home is about 2200 sq (ranch) on a full basement. We keep our thermostat on 76. The air kicks on around noon and never cuts off until around 8 or 9 at night. It usually can maintain 76 in the house but if I lower the temperature it cannot keep that lower setting during the day. We had company over the weekend and I lowered the thermostat to 74. It could not cool the house lower than 77. Is this normal? Thank you for any advice...

07-Apr-07 I am a Student from a chemical engineering background, currently learning and working with a team of research group on the usage of solar thermal technology specifically :The use of SOLAR CONCENTRATING PANELS WITH EVACUATED VACUUM TUBES to heat water supplied in heat exchangers through out a crude oil processing plant. The current method in suppling warm water for heating purposes utilizes steam. An idea of reducing the current use of steam thus resulting some amount of savings to reduce the monthyly plant operation cost is the objective. Thus the idea of using solar power to maybe cowork with steam in supplying hot water had beed an area we are trying to reserach upon.Even so this idea might be out of a question for some, but we are still at a stage of trying to work out a feasibility study on this.My question is: 1. Has this type of solar thermal technology been manipulted for this type of usage( in crude processing plants) done anywhere so far in the world? 2. Our main concern is trying to reduce the payback periods involved, increase returns and increasing the efficiency of the solar and heat use.Whats the best option in realizing this goal from material selection to making it work? Your advice on this would be very much appreciated..Thank You

28-Aug-06 A large portion of our business uses floresent lighting, the owner of this establishment(in her 90's) goes around continually flipping off lights. Usually they have to be turned right back on in a matter or minutes. What is the most economical way to use floresent lighting..I have understood that it takes more energy to turn them on than it takes to burn for several hours, plus wear and tear on swithes, starters (if applicable) and ballasts. Can you give me an idea how long an average flor. light needs to be off before it would be worth turning off? I have heard 3 to 4 hours. Thanks, Randy McCarty of McEvoy Funeral Home, Inc.   01-Aug-06 We are current seperating property and buildings do to a sell-off of one business entity. The new owners have installed a watthour meter in a 1200 amp, 480v 3phase switch supplying power to our facility. Each feeder has 3 650mcm cables tied to it for a total of nine power feeders. They claim that they take the reading from there watthour meter and multiply it by (x) 3 to come up with an aggregate amount of total wattage, and then multiply that by the going rate of.089 cents per kilowatt, is this right? The amount seems way out of line. Thanks, Judd Tounshendeaux

19-Jul-06 We have a waste water slurry pump system to tailings dams offsite with multiple outlets to the tailings dams where slurry is dumped at differen times to balance slurry level in dam. Due to the size of the tailings dam delivery head differs substantially to the extend tat deluvery to furthest outlet requires 6 slurry pumps in series to deliver. At nearest point we currently utelise one of the 6 pumps whilst thw other 5 pumps are disconnected but still in fluid line, resulting in offline pumpsand motors being rotated by throughflow of slurry. What is the potential for energy savings if we install a single pump bypass system to deliver to the nearest outlet witout passing through the offline pumps? Your reply will be appreciated Johan

05-Jun-06 I have a single wide 16x80 Fleetwood trailer home with a 1 1/2 ton central HVAC system. Last year we found a condensation leak in the unit closet. Our solution at that time was to put a drip pan in the closet and cross our fingers. We thought the finger crossing worked because this year the leak was no where to be found. We have now found our floor vents to be holding approximately 2 inches of water. Where did we go wrong? Could it be last years leak has appeared again in a different spot and is filling up our vents?

13-Mar-06 I live on the third floor of a one bedroom apartment that is 600 SF and my electric bill is over $150.00 every month. We don't use much electricity and hardly ever turn on our heat or a/c unless it is unbearable. Our water heater is electric, I don't know if that helps to know. I don't understand why our bill is so high. Could an electric company like Dayton Power and Lights be cheating us? Does someone else in the apartment complex have the ability to use our electricity? There are a couple of things that may be a causing factor:1.) Our windows don't have a great seal 2.) I don't know how old our filters are and 3.) The building was prob. built in the late 70's or early 80's. Please help, it's driving me crazy and I don't know what to do. Thanks, Tasha Rumford

29-Jan-06 Hi, A guy we had never seen before came into our office last week and said he would do a free energy check. When he was finished he told us we had old T12 lighting and said we should change it for T8. Will this really save us power? Also he said we should have a motion sensor for each lighting fixture. He said the power company might give us a rebate for the sensors, but it still seems a lot of money because they are around $60.00 each and we have about 215 lighting fixtures. My boss was also worried about the lights going on and off in the showroom and she asked me to try and find out more. Can you help please? Appreciate any help we can get. Thanks, Linda

My first electric bill was extremely high and the kwh usage went from 2190 the prior month to 4687.   27-Dec-05 I live in an approximately 1200sf ranch style home in near Atlanta, Ga. My HVAC is very old. It is a furnace/split system. Last summer, the a/c compressor went out. This winter my heating(gas) bill for november (relatively mild)will be over $300. I estimate my gas bill for jan to be $500-$600. I plan to replace my entire system in spring when it warms up. What is the best route to go economically: Heat pump with gas furnace; Heat pump with electric strip heat? I know the heat pump will cool in the summer, but i heard they don't work too well in the winter? What is the most economical invertment? Thanks

13-Dec-05 I recently purchased a 1,400-sq-ft cabin, with a half-loft, in the mountains of Colorado (approx. 9,000 ft elevation). Presently it is a shell to which I am insulating and installing a combination of drywall and tongue-and-groove wood. One wall is mostly windows. I am considering heat sources to maintain 45F during the winter months to prevent water pipe freezing and drywall from cracking when we are not there. A woodburning stove will heat the space when we are in residence. Question is what type of heat to use. I have eliminated forced air due to noise. Base board heat seems the way to go. But electric, oil-filled or ceramic? Also, how many do I need?

Is there an equation that I could use to figure out what the btu rating would be? Also in there to calculate efficiancy based off of these numbers. Thankyou

29-Aug-05 An art gallery is planning to retrofit incandescent trak lighting to a newer system. Discussion ensues - halogen vs full spectrum flourescents along with a redo of some of the original flourescents bay tube ceiling fixtures. Cooling is a problem in the building during summer - is there a way to calculate the range of heat produced from the halogens vs flourescents so that we could determine if the location has enough power to operate all elctricity needs and figure out if we are just operating our cooling system for the lighting if we use halogens? How do you compute the heat output and equate it to cost and consumption of energy. many thanks, d.

08-Mar-05 I am looking for information (tips and trips)of the merits of conservation through voltage reduction at the utility service point to facilities. Premise is that voltage provided to a facility is significantly higher than the voltage requirement of the largest single piece of equipment. Reduce voltage, watts are reduced. Voltage standards by the utility are 480V +/-5%. Actual measured service is 493V +/- 2-3%. Largest piece of equipment is 460V (code rated +/-5%). Math works, why isn't it widely applied?   08-Feb-05 hi I work for the university of Minnesota nad i am a student there i work in the heating plant and we use a 1984 coal fired boiler boiler they intend to build us a new plant as we have 3 old boilers they are to remove. we put out only about 30,000 lbs /hr and they are thinking they want to refurbish the 1984 and install a gas fired package boiler for reserve. they claim it is cheaper. so my question is is gas cheaper after 20 years or where does the cost of building and the cost of fuel and operation meet i am doing a research paper on this as well. thanks

22-Sep-04 My question is concerning DC offsets in power measurement systems. I'm trying to design an electronic power metering device that will measure current and voltage and calculate W, VAR, etc. The A/D converter I'm using offers optional high pass filters on both the current and voltage channels to remove DC from each signal. From my calculations it seems that by removing the DC component of either channel (I or V) the DC should be removed from the power (W). But after further review this seems to only be true if both signals are pure sine waves. From my understanding the waveforms current and voltage waveforms will usually be anything but pure sinewaves under different load conditions. So my question is what DC component does the power company want to measure, if any?

30-Jun-04 Broder Bros. is a warehouse distribution facility. (280) 400 watt mercury vapor lamps/fixtures are utilized to light the warehouse area. Is there a retrofit lamp that would provide at least the same and possibly more light and at the same time return an energy savings that would pay for the initial expense in a reasonble time period.

03-Dec-04 You have to determine the lumens output of these lights and see if a manufacturer has a rated unit that is less wattage for the same lumens. You also want to determine your actual goal because watts is the energy consumtion so you could put in something that is 2x as efficienct but if it is still a 400 watt unit you will consume the same amount of energy as before.

04-May-04 A general question from an end-user: My recent experiences with brand-new HVAC systems have been astonishingly negative: in a brand-new building in an office park in Southern California, and in an otherwise well-done retrofit of new offices to an 80-year-old historical landmark building in western Pennsylvania. In both cases the HVAC systems have been awful. No one could get them to run properly (either too hot or too cold, > 80 F or < 70, which is too cold for deskbound office workers). In addition the airflow was very high, and constant. It seemed that a LOT of energy must have been wasted. However, since the systems were installed (and the maintenance contract is held) by different parties than pay the electric bills and use the space... So my question is, how typical is this experience? Do these installlations require an EE degree to run properly, could that be our problem? Finally, what can an end-user do? Many thanks, and any information would be very much appreciated.

25-May-04 Bad news, your experiences are consistent with the industry. Unfortunately, in my opinion the engineering community has become a commodity based service(maybe capitalism maybe owners only looking at first(low) cost) which leaves little room for attention to detail. As a result, the commissioning industry has flurished. Addittionally, that is why there is such a strong market for performance based contracting.

Good news, even though I have an EE I wouldn't say it takes one to fix these problems. Most are simple to implement with some common HVAC knowledge which can be attained through ASHRAE or AEE books, conferences or classes.

Good luck
Joseph C. Hoose

15-Jun-04 Each of the problems you have defined are control issues which can be isolated and corrected with specifc control devices. It is mutually unfortunate that low first cost dominates over proper controls for long term operations and that the responsible parties are not the long term occupants.

Most likely, budget were tight and certain control sequence features were disregarded. However, most Building Automation Systems provide the common corrective strategies to your problem experiences such as Discharge Air Reset, Static Pressure control and Zoning of final delivery systems.

Modern Mechanical Systems have evolved to correct the problems you have defined: Variable Air Volume Air Handling Equipment provides the appropriate cooling and ventilation for interior spaces while perimeter systems carry the heating load (or reheat) requirements. So no, you should not face these problems in an on-going fashion. However to get from where the systems are to where they need to be may require more than system balancing and tuning of control parameters. Major mechanical consideration might be required to alter the existing system to enable them to perform correctly.

Tenant surveys define HVAC issues as one of the greatest concerns, so competitive Tenant markets will cause the Building Operators to correct system deficiencies or lose Tenants.

Not all problems need to be addressed with the same priority so the greatest problem areas can be corrected sequentially until an acceptable level of perforance is maintained. Reheats, booster fans and supplimental cooling systems can address the minority amount of areas currently causing the problems, thereby enabling the majority of the systems to operated in a more comfortable manner.

I would need more specific information about your systems to make a more specific recommendation. I would be happy to discuss your application and provide some good faith ideas should you desire. I can be reached at tglinke@controlpak.com

20-Apr-04 what do you define man made energy and natural energy

21-Jul-04 There can be no distinction between "man made energy" and "natural energy" as energy is energy. Think of "water"...there is no "man made water", there is just water. Some water is unprocessed by man and exists in a "natural" state (like in a river or lake) while some water is processed (cleaned or heated or mixed with other things) by man for specific purposes. The same is true of energy. Unlike water, though, energy manifests itself in many forms and can be converted into other forms. In general, the most commonly observed forms of energy are: mechanical energy, electrical energy, electromagnetic energy (radiation), thermal energy (heat), nuclear energy, and chemical energy. In fact, many of these forms are actually a different representation of another (for example, thermal energy is really just a form of electromagnetic energy acting at lower frequencies and through matter). All of these energy forms can be converted from one form to another, as well. For example, when you crank a generator you are converting mechanical energy (the "turning" of the crank) into electrical energy (which comes out of the wires attached to the generator).

Energy can also be observed in two different general forms: stored energy (sometimes known as potential energy) and active energy (sometimes known as kinetic energy). So, when you raise a brick over your head you are using mechanical energy in a kinetic form (the active motion of lifting the brick) to add potential energy to the brick. When you are done, most of the kinetic energy that you used to lift the brick now resides in potential energy in the brick over your head. If you just let the brick go, it will fall and return back into kinetic energy. If you let it fall while attached to the generator crank, you are converting potential mechanical energy (the raised brick which has the 'potential' to fall) into kinetic mechanical energy as the brick acquires motion and force from gravity into kinetic electrical energy in the wires leaving the generator. If you had a chemical battery attached to the generator, this kinetic electrical energy would then be stored at potential chemical energy in the battery waiting to be used (just like it was when the brick was over your head).

Most of the energy that man uses comes from the sun (where it comes from stored nuclear energy in the hydrogen nuclei in the sun). The sun's nuclei fuse, which releases some of this nuclear energy (and also reduces the mass of the fused nuclei...which is another story) in the form of electromagnetic energy (radiation) much of which leaves the sun in the form of light and other radiation that is too 'energetic' to be seen. When this light reaches the Earth, some of it just warms the Earth up (as it is converted into thermal energy by being absorbed by the Earth) which helps to drive the weather on our planet, but some if it is also absorbed by plants which use this light in photosynthesis (which is a chemical reaction). So, the sunlight as electromagnetic energy is now being converted into stored chemical energy in the chlorophyl of the plant (and ATP in the plant's cells). Some of this stored energy in the plant goes to making the plant grow, but the rest stays with the plant. If the plant is eaten (by you), then this energy is consumed by you where it is converted into chemical energy that you store and use to convert it to heat energy (you are always at 98.6 F regardless of how cold it is outside) and into mechanical energy (which you use to type keys or run to work or crawl out of bed). If the plant is not eaten by you, it may die and retain it's energy even long after it is dead. After millions of years, dead plant (and animal) energy converts into (partially) what are known as "fossil fuels" (coal, petroleum, methane, and others). These fuels can, then be burned by man and their heat can be used to turn generators or just heat your home. These generators then convert the energy into electrical energy which we all use for so many purposes. Still, even though man was involved in finding the fossil fuel (coal) and used this stored energy to make heat in a boiler which was used to heat your home or to turn a generator which sent electrcal energy back to your home, this energy is still natural and probably came from the sun.

So, man *converts* energy and prevents it from being lost (each time one of these processes occurs, some energy does get lost into what is sometime known as 'entropy' which is a measure of the lower availability now of the energy for a useful conversion. It is still out there, probably converting back into heat or perhaps even light...but in such small quantities it is difficult to get back.

These losses are known as inefficiencies of conversion.

Still, again, all energy that we use or that we are exposed to is the same natural stuff. We just move it along from place to place and from form to form as we need to...finally sending it off into entropy where it cannot be regained.

If you must have an answer to your question, though, you could say that "Natural Energy is energy that is stored or created in non - man made systems. When this energy is taken by man or when man collects it and then converts it into a form that is useful for a specific application, then this process of human intervention with the energy could make its later forms be defined as "Man made" where it stays for a short time and then is returned to nature where it will have a smaller but real impact (for example, even when you turn out a light (which is electromagnetic energy in the form of light), the light travelled from the bulb and was eventually absorbed into a piece of matter which will usually serve to heat the matter) (wear a black shirt under bright lights and you'll see what I mean). This matter now has a form of potential thermal energy which will convert to active thermal energy if the temperature around the matter gets colder. The thermal energy will then serve to heat whatever made the matter colder, thereby being passed on again in a potential thermal state (the warmer host matter).

...and the dance goes on. Even the most miniscule of thermal energy serves to impact the climate of our planet which drives the creation of clouds which drives rainfall. When rain falls on a high land mass and stays there, the energy has been converted again into mechanical potential energy. If this water is now allowed to flow downward through a water turbine (at a hydroelectric plant), this turbine will then turn a ganerator and then into electrical energy...and the process goes again.

Sorry for the long winded response, but I hope that it helped!

06-Apr-04 Hi. I am from Peru. I ended my univerty's studies in Energy Engineering, and I will work doing energy effricency projects for industrial and building sector. My question is, What are the intruments that I might to have to work, and can I find those?. I know that I might to buy those, then I need to know, where can I buy instruments quality? Thanks a lot for read and answer my question.

30-Mar-04 The company I work for has about 350 employees and all have either personal fluorescent desk lamps or an office with two or more ceiling lights made up of 4 fluorescent bulbs each. One of our associates came up with the idea that if each individual turned their light or lights off when they are out of their space (either for lunch or gone for at least one hour), that the company would save an average of $13 per light per year. Is this even close to being true? I thought it took far more power to turn a flouorescent light on thatn to keep it on? Thanks for you response in advance.

22-Mar-04 I have completed 4-year fulltime course in Energy Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, India 12 years ago (B.Tech.with Honours) and joined Energy Management Department of an Integrated Steel Plant in the same year. In the meantime I have completed MBA in Financial Management by correspondence. Where can I find suitable placement with my background? Do I need to upgrade myself professionally to suit International recruiters? If yes, then how?

24-Feb-04 Why did the Allied Signal-Honeywell microturbine project fail? Or in other words, do these microturbines work reliably?

27-May-04 There's no simple answer to the Allied Signal / Honeywell question. Some factors in play at the time:

In 1998, Capstone Turbine offered the first, and for a couple years, the only microturbine power system. Through initial projects with the DOE, EPRI, CERA, Sandia Labs, ORNL and others, the Capstone microturbine gained interest and a favorable reputation. So when the Parallon was introduced, they were trying to break into a market domininated by Capstone (since there was no one else). Even though their name was overwhelming better recognized, it was still an uphill battle for them to enter and take share away from Capstone (and it would be fair to say that Ingersoll-Rand's more recently introduced PowerWorks microturbine hasn't had an easy time of it either).

That said, keep in mind that there weren't millions of business people lining up to buy microturbines, then or now. Throw in a few technical issues on those early systems (for ALL microturbine makers) and the numbers just didn't add up to where they were imagined to be, especially for a diversified company like Allied Signal / Honeywell. Unable to show a profit in the expected timeframe, Honeywell decided to withdraw the product.

At Capstone, all we do is microturbines, and we are in it for the long-haul (and we have the cash and zero debt to, we believe, become profitable). Do microturbine work reliably? Microturbines have few moving parts and are designed for continuous full-load duty and minimal, annual maintenance. Our engines, in particular, have just one moving part and never use any oil, coolants, lubricants or other hazmats. There are no pumps, radiators, gearboxes or other mechanical systems to break down. Several of our earliest production systems each have more than 30,000 hours of operation with little more than infrequent minor filter, ignitor and injector cleanings/replacements. But that said, microturbines certainly aren't bullet-proof. There have been a number of our units and those of other manufacturers that have not performed as solidly as expected. Some failures are related to out-of-spec installation and operation issues, some due to the power electronics components. But for a very young technology, we, and many of our customers, feel that they are reliable. And the majority of our employees are working full-time on making them even more so.

Consider this: Capstone has sold and shipped more than 3,000 microturbine around the world introducing them about 6 years ago. Of the units that we are abof them), the installed fleet has amassed more than 6 million hours (700 years) of aggregate operation. Compare that to literally millions le to dial into (which certainly isn't all of reciprocating engine gensets that have been sold over the last hundred years or so. That technology SHOULD be rock-solid, but they are far from it. For example, after the first day of the last year's Northeastern blackout, the New York Daily News reported that about half of the hospitals in NYC suffered backup generator failures! And those generators, by law, must be tested/exercised every week. Gensets at less critical facilities certainly didn't fair a whole lot better. But at the four sites in the blackout region that had stand-alone (blackstart) versions of Capstone MicroTurbines, all four sites were able to rely on their Capstone MicroTurbines to see them through.

23-Feb-04 I work for a Steel mill that uses a tremendous amount of electricity for its electric arc furnace to melt scrap steel. We melt steel at night to avoid peak demand because of the cost. We have been doing this for 6 months and many of the workers want a chance to work a normal day shift, but it would cost the plant an additional 25,000 dollars per month to do this. Is there any possible solution to make running a day shift feasible. Thank You for any response.

09-Aug-04 A cogeneration plant would be the only way to avoid the daytime cost of electricity and it would take some time to build and a lot of capital.
08-Jan-04 This question relates to Smart Building Technology and control Systems Integration. Has anyone manufactured products utilizing wireless "mote" technology (as defined by DUST Inc.) for building automation, energy management, power management, security et.al. applications at this time? What is the operating platform by which the systems are integrated when utilizing "mote" technology? Is there product and integration software in the pipeline if it is not yet marketed?

09-Aug-04 This is way to new the HVAC industry is very slow to change and is typically at least a decade behind what you will see in industrial automation.
