value-added service

A service intended for use in conjunction with another product or service as a means of enhancing the real or perceived value of the original product or service. Usually a service for which a price is charged; common in virtually all forms of service-based commerce. An example of a value-added service is an extended warranty, which adds perceived value to the purchase of a product but normally comes at an extra cost.

The most common value-added service in the energy industry is demand-side management.
