underground (UG)

This word is used as an adjective in normal speech which means beneath the earth, but in the energy industry it can also be used as a noun. An underground is an electrical facility, usually a substation, which is buried below ground level. Underground transformers, often referred to as vault transformers, are typically covered with metal grates to allow the heat it produces to escape into the atmosphere.
