trip, trip-out

Term used to refer to the disconnection or breaking of a circuit, usually in context of an automatic interruption of the circuit such as the opening of a circuit breaker. Can also refer to the changing of a switch's position, whether performed manually or automatically. Trip-out is somewhat antiquated but its original meaning still applies; a switch or breaker is said to be tripped when it breaks or cuts out a circuit.
