When an energy customer produces their own energy, or acquires needed energy from any source using their own money and resources, that customer is referred to as self-generating, and the energy produced for that customer's use is referred to as self-generation. If a third party installs, maintains and bills for use of a generator on the customer's site, the energy the generator produces is still referred to as self-generation.
