Services offered by energy companies which are provided for the public good are referred to as public or system benefits. These benefits can include energy efficiency programs, the acquisition and use of renewable fuels, payment assistance to low-income or limited-means customers, research and development into energy efficiency improvement, programs designed to benefit the environment, and services which enhance reliability of transmission and distribution systems.
