proton

One of three main types of particle that make up an atom. Protons are large particles which, along with neutrons, create the center or nucleus of an atom. Protons carry a positive electrical charge that balances the negative electrical charge carried by an electron. Each proton in a nucleus with more than one proton requires a corresponding neutron to prevent two positively-charged particles from repelling each other.
