power plant

Most commonly, a generating station or energy production facility; a site, structure or location where electricity is produced. This term is seldom used within the energy industry itself, where production facilities are typically referred to in more descriptive, technical or specific terms. Strictly speaking, power plant is a misnomer. A more accurate term would be energy plant, since these plants are intended to produce consumable energy, not just to keep the electrical system powered.

Also, colloquially, a single generating unit. Motor vehicle engines and electric motors are sometimes referred to as power plants.
