Refers to one of four federally-owned power marketing agencies in the US under the administration of Department of Energy. These include the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), the Southeastern Power Administration (SEPA), and the Southwestern Power Administration (SWPA). The Alaska Power Administration (APA) was privatized in 1996, but is still considered to be a PMA. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a separate agency which serves similar functions, and is not considered a PMA.
PMAs sell to federal and state agencies and usually limit sales of energy on the wholesale market to publicly owned utilities.
