opt out

In the energy industry, this refers to the right of individual retail customers to choose not to acquire energy from an aggregator, co-op or utility which is able to serve them. Practically speaking, customers can only opt out if another party is ready and able to provide them with energy. In this context, choosing not to receive any energy is not usually considered to be opting out, because a customer can choose to receive no energy even if there are no competitive suppliers.
