Northern American Electric Reliability Council (NERC)

A trade organization established by the electric utility industry in 1968 which promotes the reliability of generation and transmission systems. This organization was established in response to the infamous 1967 blackout in New York as a means of insuring that measures could be taken to prevent such disasters in the future. NERC consists of ten separate reliability councils covering the continental United States, Canada, parts of Mexico, and Alaska. The ten councils represented are:

ASCC - Alaskan System Coordination Council

ECAR - East Central Area Reliability Coordination Agreement

ERCOT - Electric Reliability Council of Texas

MAIN - Mid-America Interconnected Network

MAAC - Mid-Atlantic Area Council

MAPP - Mid-Continent Area Power Pool

NPCC - Northeast Power Coordinating Council

SERC - Southeastern Electric Reliability Council

SPP - Southwest Power Pool

WSCC - Western Systems Coordinating Council
