Inspection of an energy meter for accuracy. Meters can "creep" forward or backward, producing incorrect readings in favor of either the customer or the utility. They may also produce incorrect readings if a ground fault occurs for any reason. Meter tests are performed periodically using highly accurate instruments to insure meter accuracy. These tests are typically conducted under a variety of load conditions, since the level of meter accuracy could depend on power level.
Periodic meter inspection is performed on most commercial energy meters, but is rarely needed with residential meters. These meters are manufactured by the tens of thousands and tend to be highly accurate over a very long service life.
