memory effect

When a nickel-metal hydride battery is repeatedly recharged without fully discharging, it progressively loses its ability to run at full capacity. This gradual loss of battery runtime is called memory effect. Memory effect can be ameliorated by first fully discharging a battery before recharging it.

Nickel-metal hydride batteries are commonly used in notebooks and other wireless devices.
