local distribution company (LDC), utility distribution company (UDC)

A utility, not necessarily an electric utility, that distributes its commodity (e.g. water or electricity) or service (e.g. urban transportation or waste removal) as a natural monopoly in its assigned service territory. LDC is a relatively new term which emerged in the wake of industry deregulation, and it refers to utilities that provide distribution-specific services. UDC is used in the same context in many areas.
