Any substance or object that efficiently resists conducting electricity. The objects most commonly referred to as insulators in the energy industry are the glass, porcelain, rubber, wood or plastic devices used on transmission lines to insulate the pole or transmission tower from the voltage carried by the lines. Other substances which act as electrical insulators also include braided jute, some types of carbon fiber, some silicon compounds, air, and other nonconductive materials.
