A method of energy acquisition in which a high-volume industrial customer bypasses distribution systems operated by local utilities and acquires their energy directly from a producer, usually a private non-utility generating facility. Deregulated markets frequently allow this type of energy acquisition now that transmission systems can be used by private concerns as well as public utilities.
