A collection of gaseous substances, primarily consisting of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen oxides which have been shown to warm the earth's atmosphere by trapping solar radiation. Greenhouse gases also include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), a group of chemicals used primarily in cooling systems and which are now either outlawed or severely restricted by most industrialized nations.
