Term for a company that provides both energy production and facilities for transmitting energy to wholesale customers. G&Ts are usually formed by co-ops and utilities to pool the costs and risks of constructing and managing the generation facilities and high-voltage transmission infrastructure which are needed to deliver energy to their customers. In deregulated markets, G&Ts will likely be replaced by independent transmission companies (TRANSCOs) and generating companies (GENCOs), but they may continue to operate in markets that can't support free market competition in these areas.
