A type of nuclear (atomic) reaction which releases energy by bonding the nuclei of two light atoms together to create one heavier nucleus. Fusion is a much more complex process than fission and while it is not yet financially viable for commercial energy production, it promises much greater safety and efficiency than the current generation of fission reactors.
