fuels diversity

Term describing the range of available energy-producing products which a given producer can use, or alternately the range of energy types used in a given area to produce that region's electricity.

Fuels diversity is an important factor in planning for future energy use. Lack of diversity could make an energy producer or customer overly dependent on a single fuel source whose price and availability could change dramatically on short notice. For example, a generator without sufficient fuels diversity might become impractical as a result of a large increase in the cost of its fuel. This risk can be reduced if the same generating unit can use more than one type of fuel.

The term is often used in environmental discussions, specifically in the context of diversifying the portfolio of fuels used by fossil fuel generating stations to include higher percentages of renewable or alternative fuels.
