Non-industry-specific term for a marketing strategy that imposes fees on one type of customer to pay for rebates given to other customers. In the energy industry, feebates are most commonly used to encourage emissions reduction. When feebate schemes are used, fees are levied on polluters or polluting producers and returned to non-polluters or non-polluting producers. Feebates have been used to help stimulate the growth of green power production when technologies are new and implementation costs may be particularly high.
