energy loss, transmission loss

Energy lost or wasted in the transmission of energy from the generator to the eventual customer. Transmission loss is often used in place of energy loss to prevent confusion, since transmission loss means only those losses occurring in the transmission system, which is only a part of the total delivery system for electricity.

Typical energy losses in natural gas transmission systems range from 1-2%. Energy losses on a large electrical system range from 5-8%.
