The process of disposing of assets. In the energy industry, vertically integrated utility companies may be required by law to divest themselves of any parts of their business which are not related to the specific energy-related service they wish to provide in a competitive marketplace. These assets are sold to other private concerns but in some cases, governments or regulatory authorities will assume control and ownership of assets. If these assets aren't profitable in and of themselves, the original owner might not have any reason to object to this. Divestiture may not be necessary if the company can restructure itself in a manner that meets regulatory requirements.
