cutout, fused cutout

A type of high-current fuse used in electrical distribution lines which protects the lines from overload conditions. It is typically made of metal and functions the same way as a household fuse, melting when overloads or surges are sent through it and breaking the circuit. Once the circuit is broken, all components in the circuit beyond the point where the fuse is installed should be protected from damage. Unlike a circuit breaker or reclosure, a fused cutout cannot be reset. It must be replaced once it has been tripped.
