Generic term for the noncombustible material that accumulates in steam boilers from the burning of fuel to create steam. Bottom ash is a waste product of many different types of steam energy generation, and differs from fly ash in that it is heavier than air and can be manually collected from the boiler in much the same way that ash is collected from a wood fireplace.
