alternative energy supplier

A provider of energy to a given customer or customer group which is not the supplier that the customer relies upon for the bulk of their energy needs. Alternative suppliers are usually brokers or marketers, but could also be utilities or producers capable of directly supplying the customer. These suppliers are "secondary supply lines". They may be used occasionally to provide backup or peak demand energy suppliers, or they may simply be available sources which are never actually used.
