Southern Company, with revenues of over $3 billion (per year ending Dec. 2001), is a regional electric power generation and distribution company, focused on the eight-state "Super Southeast" region. This is one of the most economically vibrant markets in the US for the energy utility industry. Southern Company has been servicing this region for over 100 years. Based in Atlanta, Southern Company has five operating utilities, as well as a wholesale generation business.

Its five operating utilities, Georgia Power, Alabama Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power, and Savannah Electric, generate more than 30,000 MW of power, serving nearly 4 million customers in Southeastern United States.

Southern provides a wide range of customized energy-related services through Southern Company Energy Solutions, and wireless telecommunication services through Southern LINC.
