American Electric Power Company (AEP) concentrates on wholesale and unregulated energy markets in North America and Europe. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, it is America's largest generator of electricity, and one of the leading power marketers, with nearly 100 years of power industry experience. Its assets include power plants, natural gas pipelines, gas storage fields, barges, coal mines and rail cars. It reported revenues of $61.3 billion (per year end Dec. 2001).
AEP owns and operates more than 80 generating stations in the United States, with a capacity of more than 38,000 MW. Outside the U.S., AEP holds interests in generating facilities in the U.K., Mexico, Brazil, China, Australia, and the Pacific Region. Two AEP units, AEP Pro Serv. Inc. and Numanco Group, offer power plant construction and maintenance services.
AEP has natural gas asset bases in Texas, Louisiana, and the Gulf Coast. Together they account for 6,200 miles of natural gas pipelines and a capacity of over 3.8 billion cubic feet (bcf) per day. In addition, AEP has 128 bcf of total storage capacity at these facilities.
AEP also has a large coal mining and marketing operation.
