A Practical Understanding of Commercial Risks in Laytime and Demurrage

London, UK

Thursday, July 9, 2009 - Friday, July 10, 2009

In theory, the determination of laytime and demurrage, if incurred, is a straightforward process as all of the relevant terms and clauses are contained in the charter party. However, as anyone who has examined a charter party will be only too well aware the wording is often less than clear and consequently the meaning is obscure. In short, lack of clarity over what does and does not count as used laytime can lead to contentious issues between parties. One of two things then happens. Either, a claim is made which potentially can require substantial resources to pursue, both in terms of time and money. Alternatively, potential claims are left to accumulate, unattended and considerable sums of money go begging.

NaREC, Blyth, Northumberland, UK

Monday, September 14, 2009 1:00 PM - Thursday, September 17, 2009 4:15 PM

Sourcing 20% of the EU's energy from renewable sources by 2020 is a major driver for the UK Government's energy generation aspirations.

In practice, much of this will be connected as 'distributed generation', primarily domestic and industrial CHP schemes, wind farms and diesel power generation, in addition to other renewables such as hydro and solar PV.

This course will provide engineers with an appreciation of the technical issues relating to distributed generation, equipping them with a competitive advantage when approaching these complex issues.

The Changing Geopolitics of Oil and Gas: Identifying and Managing Political Risk

Washington, DC

Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - Wednesday, September 16, 2009

This two-day workshop explores geopolitical context within which oil and gas companies operate and how it affects daily business practices. This will be done, with a view toward understanding particular geographical locales and associated political risks. Regions to be covered include: United States, Africa, Latin America, and Middle East and Asia. Special emphasis will be placed on the rise of resource nationalism, as evidenced by the more than 100 national oil companies that currently exist. Moreover, political risk tools and strategies will be presented so that delegates learn concrete skills that they can use in their work.

Often, risks are assessed upstream, where exploration happens. Increasingly, companies have become alarmed at risks taking place midstream - specifically in the area of maritime shipping. In recent years, piracy on the high seas has become politically and financially costly for tankers and ships carrying oil and petroleum-related products. The course will explore these issues by reviewing the phenomenon of piracy, where it is most likely to happen, and also international efforts to address piracy. The stark reality is that most responses are reactive. Stopping piracy is the critical challenge.

A number of critical issues will be specifically addressed:

Africa: How Nigerian rebels/maritime piracy affects oil production/transport geopolitics. How reforms to the national oil company are proceeding and what it means for you. Europe : How the events of late 2008 and early 2009 have affected security of supply - Russia and its relationship to its ex-satellite states. What does this mean for gas infrastructure going forward? Asia: China is the regional heavyweight and has made gains through its Go Abroad policy. Where is China and how is it out-competing Western oil companies? What does this mean in terms of geopolitics and strategy and public policy? Latin America: The region has drifted to the left with leaders such as Chavez and Morales controlling vast quantities of oil and natural gas. Which way are the political winds blowing? Will extra-legal nationalization continue or will companies be invited back in?

International Gas Contracts - Commercial Factors and Negotiations

Oxford, UK

Monday, October 5, 2009 - Friday, October 9, 2009

The vast majority of natural gas sales, including international ones, are via pipeline. Unfortunately such familiarity may lead to a less than successful approach to the negotiation of such sales and purchase contracts - as several companies have learned to their cost. This five-day course will give you a deeper understanding of the contractual issues as well as risks and how to mitigate them. It will also help to reduce the time (and money) spent on negotiations. The main focus of the course will be on large pipeline international sales and purchase agreements but it will also include their relationship to other contracts in the pipeline gas chain. In particular, it will consider how the risks and contractual provisions change as the contracting parties change along the gas chain from gas field to end-users such as electric power generators, chemical and fertilizer plant.

Using the Bolonia© case study, participants will be able to practice their negotiation skills and knowledge gained from the course as well as test their understanding of the contractual issues involved.

Delegates will have the opportunity to trade both structured and live markets. It is recommended that delegates should have attended "International Oil Supply, Transportation, Refining and Trading" (SP1) or have working knowledge of the subjects covered in that course.

After reviewing the background of supply, refining and transportation, the course focuses on the key markets, pricing and the mechanisms involved in trading. Aspects of the various exposures encountered in trading are covered together with an introduction to price risk management. Syndicate exercises will address each skill required. Additionally, during the week, in a continuous theme case study, each syndicate group will manage their own company positions of production, refinery supply, product purchase/disposal and speculative trading, reacting to new positions generated and changing market prices which simulate a live situation. Monday, October 12, 2009 - Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Building on the knowledge gained in "Tanker Ownership, Chartering and Operations" (TD2), this three-day course offers delegates a more in-depth exploration of contracts and pricing issues surrounding the tanker industry. The course focuses on the implementation of tactics and practical strategies for enhancing commercial returns and business performance in tanker transportation - both from charterers' and owners' perspectives. It looks at how commercial risks may be hedged using freight futures or by entering into period charter agreements. Negotiating techniques and the key elements of contracts of affreightment are examined and discussed. A legal workshop provides a series of case studies designed to highlight some of the more common events impacting on commercial operations.

The course also looks at how companies have looked to improve their competitive positions through benchmarking and the development of tanker pools. In a high oil price environment, delegates learn how to improve voyage economics through optimising bunkering strategies.

The course emphasises sound commercial practice, drawing on the working knowledge and experience of the various industry speakers. Case studies and practical sessions provide delegates with hands-on experience of decision making in this area. While not essential it would be preferable for participants to have already attended "Tanker Ownership, Chartering and Operations" (TD2).

Presented in association with Richardson Lawrie Associates (RLA) - a maritime economics and business consulting firm with an extensive global practice in oil, gas and chemicals transportation. Together with The Oxford Princeton Programme, RLA has been presenting training programmes for many years around the world.

There are no pre-requisites for this course, nor is any advanced preparation required.

The Economics of Downstream Logistics and Distribution

Oxford, UK

Monday, October 12, 2009 - Thursday, October 15, 2009

With the constant pressure on downstream organisations to minimise costs, the need to develop a process of continuous operational improvement becomes vital. A need to 'empower' operational staff closer to the customer becomes a 'driver for change' as companies move towards process-driven organisations and away from hierarchical control. The key to continuous improvement is to develop and share 'best practice' in the logistics and distribution function. The way to achieve this is to employ benchmarking techniques as a tool to develop key indicators for performance measurement and produce key indicators against which organisations can measure their performance improvement.

Trading Operations Practice

Singapore

Monday, October 12, 2009 - Wednesday, October 14, 2009

This course provides the detailed practices and techniques involved in successful trading operations in today's international crude and product markets. It has been designed for front, middle and back office personnel who need a detailed insight into trading operation practices and emphasises the operational impacts to corporate profitability and risk. The course commences with the progress of a trade, from verbal agreement between two traders, through the subsequent preparation of the contract, operation of the contract with chartering and nominations of the tanker, invoicing and presentation of documents, culminating in post contractual settlement of claims arising from the contract operation. Each area is subsequently discussed in detail with further presentations which also include topics such the quality and specifications of actively traded product groups; viz. gasoline and naphtha, middle distillates (diesel, gasoil and jet fuel) and residual fuels oils. Blending theory and practice, operation of storage and pipelines are also addressed.

LNG Shipping - A Voyage of Discovery

Singapore

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 - Friday, October 16, 2009

LNG transportation accounts for 10% to 30% of total LNG supply chain costs from upstream gas production through to terminalling and regasification on the import side. It is central, both figuratively and physically, to the LNG supply chain and the safe, efficient execution of LNG supply contracts. The LNG shipping sector has also been evolving rapidly in recent years in response to accelerated growth in the international gas markets and - as in other parts of the LNG supply chain - technological innovation is seen as the means of optimising costs and increasing cargo outturn. New players have entered the LNG shipping business and the LNG industry is increasingly looking for more flexible shipping arrangements. Larger ships, innovative ship designs, new containment and propulsion systems have been developed while safety and environmental factors remain foremost considerations in the construction and operation of these vessels.

This intensive three-day course is designed to take participants through all of the commercial, technical, operating, legislative and legal issues affecting the marine transportation of LNG from export to import terminal. This is accomplished through a combination of presentations, exercises and case studies under the direction of a team of expert speakers with practical experience of the LNG industry and shipping. The aim is to give participants the ability to assess opportunities and manage operational and commercial risks in LNG shipping.

Natural Gas Sales and Marketing in a Competitive Environment

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Monday, October 19, 2009 - Friday, October 23, 2009

Competitive pressures increase the need to market effectively. This is particularly true in liberal gas markets. This five-day course charts the shift from a monopoly controlled market to the liberalised and highly competitive model. The role of alternative fuels in this change will also be reviewed. Using the Bolonia© case study, the course analyses the key gas market sectors, considering the viewpoint of the producer, transmission company, gas marketer and consumer in a recently privatised gas supply system. The course also provides an insight into strategies for setting gas prices, in both regulated and liberal gas markets, against a background of competing fuels. Also included is a review of the introduction of new technologies for gas utilisation, its economic impact and how it can be used to expand the market for natural gas.

Total Risk Management in the International Oil and Derivatives Market

Oxford, UK

Monday, October 19, 2009 - Friday, October 23, 2009

This course provides a comprehensive summary of the markets together with the techniques and range of trading instruments that are typically employed. The primary focus is the identification and management of the wide variety of risks that arise from the trading activity. The purpose is to enable delegates to design, critique and implement a control and monitoring regime within their own trading organisation; information from which could be utilised to report to senior management. Case studies are used to learn the techniques involved, which will be reinforced in syndicate groups where risk arising from a portfolio of positions is assessed.

Case studies will address each technique used in the management of risk. A continuous theme case study will also allow each syndicate to manage a portfolio of their own group positions. It is recommended that delegates should have attended TR1 or have a reasonable working knowledge of the subjects covered in that course.

The course commences with a recap of the markets and trading techniques, the instruments used, and the methodology of trading oil and derivatives. Within each trading area the risks are identified and available management tools are discussed in detail. The theory and mechanics of advanced instruments including swaps, CFDs, traded and OTC option are explained and the application of VaR in assessing a variety of risk is discussed in detail. Along with price risk, other areas of exposure will be addressed such as counterparty, credit exposure, trading limits and mark to market in-house position management.

Overall delegates are trained in the concept of identification, management and reporting of the total risk confronting their trading group.

Case studies will address each technique used in the management of risk. A continuous theme case study will also allow each syndicate to manage a portfolio of their own group positions.
